Matthew McConaughey won't return for a second season of TRUE DETECTIVE

I’ve yet to see it, but according to the buzz of Twitter around me, True Detective is some kind of essential viewing for any fan of shows that take a left-turn into weird and creepy territory. The mystery series was designed as a standalone single season, obviously wrapping several threads and loose ends by the time it reached its conclusion.

But seeing as how the world is in love with it, a sequel series is no doubt on the way. Just don’t expect Matthew McConaughey to return.

Fresh off of an Oscar win for The Dallas Buyers Club, McConaughey confirmed to Variety with one quick quote his intentions on a second season of the show:

No, I won’t be back for season two. Season one was finite.

Series creator Nic Pizzolatto feels that he can at least get some of the gang back for a new stab at the concept of the show, saying in an interview that “It would be great if we could use some of the same actors, like a reparatory company. It would be different characters, different setting. That’s part of the fun of the anthology.”

Damn, I really need to start watching this show. Be a dear, and please don’t spoil the final episode in the comments if you’ve already seen it, for those of us who are blissfully unaware of the plot.

  1. In the last episode, the detectives investigate the murder of a man in a golden gimp suit. Leo Di Caprio is the prime suspect. It turns out he did it with the trophy in the alley where the body was found on the night of a prestigious awards ceremony.

It is slow-burn, but amazing. Not everyone’s taste. My current favourite for 2014.

I’ve only watched the pilot so far – really enjoyed it. It’s a slow burner.

Do yourself a favour, it is awesome and a great slow burner. Enjoyed this even more than The Killing.

Only one more week to go then. If you haven’t seen it yet, I would also recommend The Americans, fantastic series and the whole first season is now available.

Actually. IT might not be a bad thing. They could continue the theme but with different actors. So what ‘partners’ who you like to see team up?
I would go with Tom Hanks & Mr T… “Cuuumon Tom, that foooool is Craaaaazi!”

but seriously what pair would work as well as Harrelson and Mcconaughey?

Firstly, this is the best show on TV at the moment, hands down.

Secondly, this is not actually news (Sorry, Darryn). Writer/creator Nic Pizollato always planned this as an anthology series, where each season will see a new director and group of actors tell a totally new crime story. So McConaughey was never actually supposed to return for another season.

Knew that as well. It was always planned that they could do more seasons but with different story arcs and actors. Also please tell Darryn that the series is still 3 episodes from conclusion but it is AWESOME!!!!!

It’s actually only 1 episode from conclusion. Only 8 eps in a season.
