Unlike the most recent superhero movie, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past’s promo campaign had taken the novel approach of only showing you the entire movie in the actual movie. Yes, there have been several trailers and clips, but they’ve ranged from the intriguing to the plain awesome rather than the spoilery.

That all changed yesterday though, when a pair of new clips from the movie was released. While the first definitely only fell into the “awesome” category, the second just outright gives away a major plot point.

Ever since we saw the first bit of footage from the film, fans have been wondering how it’s possible that James McAvoy’s young Xavier is walking around, when the last time we saw him in X-Men: First Class he had been suffering from an acute case of paralysis via a bullet in the spinal column. Writer/producer Simon Kinberg told us that the mystery of Xavier’s healing was not a trivial one and was pivotal to his character arc.

And yet, they’ve just gone and given it away entirely.

Now if you haven’t figured this out by now yet, this is A VERY BIG SPOILER. If you prefer to not know anything, then just check out this first clip showing Jennifer Lawrence’s blue skinned Mystique getting acrobatic and ass-kickery as she tries to get close to Peter Dinklage’s Sentinel creator, Bolivar Trask. After that though, you better exit stage left, before you see something you don’t want to.

And this is where the SPOILER-phobes leave us. Don’t say, I didn’t warn you.

It’s clear now that Xavier is going to be faced with some great choice of either fully embracing his mutancy, so as to have access to all his prodigious mental abilities (I’m guessing to save Mystique, his foster sister), or giving up those mutant gifts in order to retain his ability to walk. It’s a poignant little deviation from the mythos we know, as now Xavier is not merely struck down but rather is choosing to make the sacrifice of being confined to that wheelchair for the rest of his life, so as to best serve his fellow mutants. It’s a small plot point, but one that does wonders to explain what type of man Xavier really is.

One other thing about this clip though that I have to mention, is just what a step up in acting talent on screen McAvoy and Michael Fassbender have been for the franchise. I mean, you’re never going to hear me bad mouth Sirs Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart, but they just never had the meaty material to truly show off their dramatic chops like their younger counterparts do. This one clip alone arguably has more a believable and powerful dramatic range than anything that appeared in Singer’s original X-Men films.

X-Men: Days of Future Past also stars the gigantic cast of Hugh Jackman, Nicholas Hoult, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Evan Peters, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Halle Berry, Lucas Till, Omar Sy, Adan Canto, Daniel Cudmore, and Bingbing Fan,and is scheduled for release on May 23, 2014.
