Everything that you may have missed in the latest trailer for AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

Explosions! Killer robots! Fleeting glimpses of a brand new Avenger! This week’s release of the final Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer was a slobber-knocker, a two and a half minute run of bright colours and blockbuster action that left our jaws on the floor. If you’re anything like us however, you’ve probably watched that trailer a few dozen times by now, sifting for clues. Fortunately, we’re here to save your bandwidth from extinction as we take a look at the recent bit of footage and over-analyse it. C’mon, it’s going to be fun! So let’s start with all the new footage, as the trailer opens up to some good ol’ world domination.

Avengers AOU 3 (1)

Ultron isn’t exactly being subtle about his plans here for world domination/genocide/fleshbag extermination, having made himself at home in what appears to be an old abandoned castle from the World War Two era. Interestingly enough, this particular pose and scene is ripped straight from his first proper appearance in the comics as a villain, as he had assumed the guise of the Crimson Cowl, working together with the Masters Of Evil to defeat the Avengers. See below for an example:

Crimson_Cowl

It’s a great and subtle nod to the origins of the character, something that director Joss Whedon had already done in the first Avengers movie.

Avengers AOU 3 (2)

And here we have Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor Johnson) and the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) pondering if it’s a wise idea to throw in with a nigh-unstoppable robot who isn’t exactly user-friendly.

Avengers AOU 3 (3)

More of Ultron musing to himself about how he plans to rip hope away from humanity, before he destroys our species, as the AI stays in the shadows.

Avengers AOU 3 (4)

In the comics, Ultrons original body was that of a rudimentary vacuum cleaner on wheels that had the mobility of an ED-209 robot on an escalator. In the sequel, it looks like his first form will be a barely-functioning hodge-podge of Stark tech that is hellbent on getting an upgrade. Clearly, this was the better prototype form to go with.

Avengers AOU 3 (5)

Whatever Ultron is jacking into, it can’t be good.

Avengers AOU 3 (6)

And at this rate of jacking, he’s going to go blind.

Avengers AOU 3 (7)

Avengers Tower (Formerly Stark International) is looking nice and shiny!

Avengers AOU 3 (8)

And here we see the Ultron program, having clearly infected Tony’s lab as it builds itself a new body.

Avengers AOU 3 (9)

“I tried to create a suit of armor around the world, but I created something terrible,” Tony says, while obscuring something behind him.

Avengers AOU 3 (10)

“Artificial intelligence” Banner quickly realises as a new threat makes itself known.

Avengers AOU 3 (11)

I’m loving how just unrelenting the Ultron drones are, as they pull off some day of the dead moves in their pursuit of humanity.

Avengers AOU 3 (12)

In the Avengers, Tony Stark spent most of the film wearing a Black Sabbath concert tour top. This time, he’s got Bruce Lee as his T-shirt mascot of choice. This has nothing to do with the plot whatsoever, but Bruce Lee is cool. And I just wanted to remind you all of that.

Avengers AOU 3 (13)

The stakes are massively high this year, as the day can’t always be saved. Something that Captain America learns the hard way as he watches his failure to save civilians unfold right before his eyes.

Avengers AOU 3 (14)

Love is in the air, and I couldn’t be happier for Bruce Banner and the Black Widow. Although good luck with that kind of relationship, as it might be a bit dangerous to get Banner too excited.

Avengers AOU 3 (15)

Clearly licking their wounds after an earlier encounter with Ultron, the Avengers appear to have retreated to a low-tech farm house to work out a strategy to deal with the menace. One that hopefully involves them not failing spectacularly again, as Stark tries to motivate the team into getting back into the field.

Avengers AOU 3 (16)

And speaking of a team, they’re all getting ready to rumble.

Avengers AOU 3 (17)

Calm yourself FOX, Wolverine isn’t joining the Avengers (Although I love the sly nod to him), but Hawkeye is clearly readying a quiver of arrows.

Avengers AOU 3 (18)

And as far as money shots go, seeing the entire team leap into action like this, is pure nerdvana.

Avengers AOU 3 (19)

I’m guessing that the first act in the film will deal with the Avengers storming the Hydra base that was seen in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, that housed Loki’s scepter and the Infinity Gem inside of it. That gem still has a big part to play in The Avengers: Infinity War, but I’m curious to see if Stark uses the power inside the scepter to help save the day.

Avengers AOU 3 (20)

Another great group shot here, but notice how Banner stands apart from the others, dwarfed by them when he happens to not be in his usual jade jaws form.

Avengers AOU 3 (21)

There’ll be plenty of action sequences between Ultron and the Avengers, although I’d hazard a guess that this comes from the third act. It’s interesting to see that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are still siding with Ultron at this point.

Avengers AOU 3 (22)

Looks like Cap still hasn’t asked Agent Sharon out, as he remarks that he has no plans made for the rest of the night.

Avengers AOU 3 (23)

I’m digging how Captain America is making up for the lack of kickass in the first Avengers movie here, going toe to toe with Ultron on board a truck in heavy traffic. Although seeing Ultron’s facial expression change to anger after getting hit with Cap’s shield, is rather terrifying.

Avengers AOU 3 (24)

Who’s that in the back of Ultron’s truck? The Vision? Possibly, but enlarging or brightening the picture only makes it look even more mysterious.

Avengers AOU 3 (25)

Black Widow, picking up the shield. Holy Winter Soldier metaphors Batman!

Avengers AOU 3 (26)

No matter how Age Of Ultron turns out, I don’t think there’ll be a single person in attendance who doesn’t walk out of the cinema with a huge grin on their face after the Hulk vs Hulkbuster fight.

Avengers AOU 3 (27)

The powers of the Scarlet Witch have flip-flopped in recent years. What was once an ill-defined ability to alter probabilities and fire hex bolts, was later retconned into the power to alter reality at a whim, a frightening power that her emotinal state had an impact on. While we’ve yet to see any of SW’s more phyiscal skills at work, it looks like she has a few mental tricks up her sleeve that will have the Avengers facing their inner demons.

Avengers AOU 3 (28)

X-Men: Days Of Future Past easily had the best use of super speed since Superman decided to rewrite history. Age Of Ultron will need to up the ante in order to top that particular scene, although decking Captain America with a well-aimed right hook is a good start so far.

Avengers AOU 3 (29)

“IS THAT THE BEST YOU CAN DO?”

Avengers AOU 3 (30)

Ultron’s chuckle here, is completely chilling as he raises his hand and…

Avengers AOU 3 (31)

…Summons hundreds of Ultron drones to finish off the Avengers.Damn son.

Avengers AOU 3 (33)

“You had to ask”.
“Oh shut up Steve.”

Avengers AOU 3 (34)

The Widow’s Sting, 2.0 edition.

Avengers AOU 3 (35)

And here’s where the trailer seals the deal, as Cap and the rest of them team get to work on dismantling the Ultron army.

Avengers AOU 3 (36)

Another great team effort here, as the Avengers fend off what looks like an unstoppable foe.

Avengers AOU 3 (37)

I could watch Hulk tear through Ultron drones all day, and never get tired of it.

Vision

But wait, there’s more! Before the trailer ends, we get a sneak peek at Paul Bettany’s Vision, and his creepy dilating mechanical eyes. I ove that Marvel have kept this character out of the spotlight for the majority of their marketing blitz so far, as I’ve got a feeling that he’ll be the best surprise in the entire movie.

  1. Ultron looks terrifying, like a mechanical Mum-Ra. If I was 8, he would probably have scared the shit out of me, just like Mum-Ra did when I was that age
