Many so-called hardcore fans of Fantastic Four were quite upset over the casting for director Josh Trank’s upcoming reboot. Most of their aversion though had more to do with start Michael B. Jordan’s skin pigmentation than anything else.

But why did Trank cast a black actor to play Johnny Storm aka The Human Torch, a traditionally white character? Well, because they were friends, probably. Oh and there’s also the little thing of him being an incredibly good actor. And as Trank and writer/producer Simon Kinberg explain in these featurettes focusing on each of the four principal cast – Miles Teller as Reed Richards aka Mr Fantastic, Kate Mara as Susan Storm aka The Invisible Woman, Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm aka The Thing, and the aforementioned Jordan – being a good actor trumps everything else.

Along with those four featurettes, a new international trailer has also been released. It’s essentially the same trailer we’ve seen previously, with the addition of a single brief new scene close to the end of it. Pay attention and you’ll actually be treated to a snippet of some of the heroes actually using their powers (as can also be glimpsed in the new poster above) as siblings Johnny and Susan Storm flying side by side through some kind of rockface.

And for those of you scratching your heads right now, yes, Susan Storm can actually fly. In the comics, she often uses the invisible force fields she generates to levitate or suspend herself or other people/objects in the air. In this clip though, she is definitely taking it a bit further than merely keeping some people hovering slightly off the ground, which is not something we’ve seen a lot of. I guess we can cue up all those hardcore fans again to rage against this as well.

Fantastic Four also stars Toby Kebbell as Doctor Doom, Reg E. Cathey as Dr. Franklin Storm, and Tim Blake Nelson as Harvey Elder (aka Mole Man). It hits theatres on August 7, 2015.

THE FANTASTIC FOUR, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.

  1. I gotta say, I’ve always thought the FF crew were a bunch of watered down rejects as a kid, but I am pretty keen to see the reboot. The dramatics are going to sell it for me.
