Look, I know that this is a spinoff from The Flash, but daaaaayum that was fast! It’s barely been a week since we even got a title and synopsis for CW’s planned team-up spinoff from Arrow/The Flash, and the network has already dropped the first trailer.

I know you’re dying to see how Ray Palmer, Captain Cold and the rest of the kookie gang fit together with time traveller Rip Hunter – not to mention how a dead Sara Lance can be starring in this show – so enough prattling from and let’s get to it!

Atom shrinks! ATOM SHRINKS! Oh be still my geeky heart! Besides for Brandon Routh’s Palmer finally not just being treated like an Iron Man knockoff and actually living up to his codename, there’s a lot of other stuff to take in from this trailer.

As many suspected would be the case, Caity Lotz’s Sara Lance has been resurrected through one of Ra’s Al Ghul’s Lazarus Pits and is now the White Canary. That’s actually a totally different character in the comic books, but it looks like they’re just borrowing the name here. I’m guessing that this might spin directly out of what’s currently happening in Arrow (no spoilers here!).

Besides for Sara’s return, Captain Cold is as cool as ever, Prof Stein will indeed also be his alter ego Firestorm (though how Stein and Ronnie Raymond will link up isn’t clear) and we get our first look at the new characters in Ciara Renee’s high-flying Hawkgirl and of course Doctor Who alum Arthur Darvill as the Time Lord Master Rip Hunter. Who is from East London. Hopefully not our East London.

On top of that, the show’s surprisingly sci-fi heavy premise (remember how grounded and realistic Arrow started out as?) will see the team traveling though time to defeat the megalomaniacal Vandal Savage, actually a personal favourite villain of mine. In the comics, Savage was a prehistoric cavemen who came into contact with an extraterrestrial meteorite that enhanced his intelligence and made him immortal. He used these gifts to become a powerful tyrant/emperor/leader throughout various periods of history (he is supposedly also the inspiration for the biblical story of Cain, having committed the very first murder), but he is always looking to become even more powerful. He’s also used his incredibly long lifetime to accumulate and perfect a myriad of physical skills. In other words, a crazy experienced genius who you can’t kill but who can kill you in ways you’ve never even thought of. Yep, that sounds like exactly the type of bad guy you need a whole team to take down.

Along with the trailer, CW has also released this behind-the-scenes video showing us how some of the big action beats glimpsed in the trailer were put together, as well as exec-producer Marc Guggenheim confirming that the show will have a 13-episode first season and also giving a great blurb for what sets it apart from the CW’s other shows:

“‘Arrow’ is all about saving Starling City, ‘Flash’ is all about saving Central City. This is the first show that we’re doing that’s all about saving the world.”

Here’s the show’s full synopsis:

When heroes alone are not enough… the world needs legends. Having seen the future, one he will desperately try to prevent from happening, time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter is tasked with assembling a disparate group of both heroes and villains to confront an unstoppable threat — one in which not only is the planet at stake, but all of time itself. Can this ragtag team defeat an immortal threat unlike anything they have ever known? DC’S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW stars Victor Garber (“The Flash,” “Alias”); Brandon Routh (“Arrow,” “Superman Returns”); Arthur Darvill (“Doctor Who”); Caity Lotz (“Arrow”); Ciarra Renee (“Pippin”); Franz Drameh (“Edge of Tomorrow”); with Dominic Purcell (“The Flash,” “Prison Break”); and Wentworth Miller (“The Flash,” “Prison Break”). Based on the characters from DC Comics, DC’S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW is from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television, with executive producers Greg Berlanti (“Arrow,” “The Flash,” upcoming “Pan”), Marc Guggenheim (“Arrow,” “Eli Stone,” “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters”), Andrew Kreisberg (“Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Eli Stone,” “Warehouse 13”) and Sarah Schechter (“Arrow,” “The Flash,” upcoming “Pan”).

That’s weird. It is there twice. But I checked it earlier and it was fine. Blame Canada.
