Nobody can ever accuse Christopher Nolan of having a on-note filmography. The acclaimed fan-favourite director has started his career with a mind-bending thriller (Memento), then he revitalized the comic book movie genre (The Dark Knight Trilogy), dipped back into twisty adult thrillers (The Prestige), brought that crazy mind-warping to sci-fi (Inception) and then went totally big idea sci-fi bonkers (Interstellar). So yeah, he’s been around. And now he’s adding another genre feather to his cap: War movie!

Variety is reporting that three-time Oscar nominated filmmaker’s next film will be the WWII action thriller Dunkirk, based off his own original screenplay. As the title implies, the movie will focus on “the legendary evacuation of the northern French city during WWII”. With this being a Christopher Nolan movie, everything else is being kept tightly under wraps. Or at least it would be if this wasn’t a real event that we can read about in the history books. Or Wikipedia:

The Dunkirk evacuation, code-named Operation Dynamo, also known as the Miracle of Dunkirk, was the evacuation of Allied soldiers from the beaches and harbour of Dunkirk, France, between 27 May and 4 June 1940, during World War II. The operation was decided upon when large numbers of Belgian, British, and French troops were cut off and surrounded by the German army during the Battle of France. In a speech to the House of Commons, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill called the events in France “a colossal military disaster”, saying “the whole root and core and brain of the British Army” had been stranded at Dunkirk and seemed about to perish or be captured. In his We shall fight on the beaches speech on 4 June, he hailed their rescue as a “miracle of deliverance”.

While the Allies initially thought that Operation Dynamo would be a colossal tragedy and disaster, through a combination of luck and tenacity it would (HISTORY SPOILER ALERT!) end up being an incredible success, with nearly 340 000 soldiers eventually being rescued successfully despite being surrounded by the Germans.

With that, the movie is expected to have a big ensemble cast, and it appears that Nolan is mainly going for unknown actors, and recently began testing teenagers in London for the young leads. There are a few more senior roles up for grabs though, and it’s said that the Bridge of Spies duo of Tom Hanks and Mark Rylance are looking set join, along with Kenneth Branagh and Tom Hardy.

Warner Bros. has slotted the film into their scheduled for July 21, 2017, and production is set to get underway in May on some of the real life WWII locations with Nolan using “a combination of Imax 65mm and 65mm large format film for maximum image quality and high-impact immersion”. In other words, this should look amazing!

Personally, I’m a bit of a Nolan fanboy, and even when he’s not at the very best of his game (Yes, The Dark Knight Rises, I’m looking at you!) he’s still producing work better than most other big name directors out there, so I really cannot wait to see what his take on a WWII epic looks like.
