Assassin’s Creed is a popular franchise to all of the video-gamers out there and has an incredible following with over 73 million copies (as of 2014) of the different versions of the game sold worldwide. So, it is a franchise with a huge fanbase and a film that many are hoping can buck the trend of terrible video-game to movie adaptations and keep the strong reputation and quality of the franchise moving forward. And unlike other video-game adaptations, the Assassins Creed franchise actually has a pretty strong backstory and rich material to draw upon for the screenwriters to work with. The challenge will be trying to keep the story in line with the video game franchise to keep loyalists happy, while still bringing freshness to it to surprise the audiences.

For those not familiar with the video-game franchise, the story follows a centuries long secret war between the Order of the Assassins, trying to help mankind, and the Knights Templar, trying to rule mankind through some magical devices left behind by an ancient, almost god-like, pre-human race. The game’s hook is that modern characters are able relive the genetic memories of their ancestors through a machine called the Animus. The movie follows a new character in the franchise, Callum Lynch, played by Michael Fassbender, who is brought in by Abstergo Industries, the modern face of the Knights Templar, to relieve the memories of his ancestor, Aguilar a famous Spanish assassin from the 15th Century, also played by Michael Fassbender (because apparently the gene pool doesn’t change much over a couple hundred years).

The good news for those looking forward to this adaptation is that filming has now wrapped up and is entering the post-production phase, so is looking on track for its 21 December release date. Azaïzia Aymar, Ubisoft’s head of content for the Assassin’s Creed franchise, has been working as a consultant on the film set and posted the following picture on his twitter account confirming that film has finally completed. Unfortunately the photo was taken in front of a green screen, so doesn’t reveal any secrets about the movie, although I am hoping CGI is not used to much. The high action intensity of the video-games will be best realised if filmed in live action.

The film’s star, Oscar-nominated Fassbender, who also acts as one of the film’s producers, sat down with Wall Street Journal recently to speak about his character, describing the filming of the movie as:

It was great. It was a huge learning experience. To be a producer on it as well was very educational. I think we’ve got something special. I think we’ve done something original in this genre.

I’m hoping that its original not just to the movie genre, but to the video game story-line as well and I am looking forward to Fassbender’s performance of the lead character. He is a very talented actor, but we haven’t seen too much of him in a high paced action film, so I’m hoping he will impress in the physical aspects of the role, as I have no doubt he will get the dramatic components down if the script is solid. When asked about how it was to play the role of Callum, he had the following to say

He is an outsider who has been institutionalized from his early teens. Callum is a little bit of a lost soul, so reliving Aguilar’s memories and connecting with his ancestor helps him begin to identify his lineage and where he comes from in a way.

The film will also star Jeremy Irons, who takes on the role of Alan Rikkin, the head of Abstergo Industries and is being directed by Justin Kurzel (The Turning, Macbeth). Both of these people are also more known for dramatic films than action pics, so expect the movie to have some depth and not be purely action focused.

So far the film is looking like it will be a faithful and worthwhile part of the Assassin’s Creed franchise and I’m hoping it will be a lot of fun. Do you think this will be a huge success or continue the trend of poor video-game adaptations and be a dud?
