Star Wars may have put a wrecking ball to all kinds of records. But that don’t scare Ride Along 2 nothin’.
- 01. RIDE ALONG 2
This marked a four week local reign for the buddy cop movie that is doing far better than anyone could have expected. Equalling Star Wars, it goes to show that a month at number 1 is a really good run.
- 02. THE FINEST HOURS (Incl 3D & Imax)
Every now and then a big storm movie tries to overpower the charts, but it rarely succeeds. I think the most successful ‘storm’ film may have been Sharknado. Seriously. This curse continues: The Finest Hours debuted at 2nd, but it’s already bombing abroad.
- 03. DIRTY GRANDPA
You know what: I want to see this movie. Everyone keeps saying how terrible it is, but after dropping only one place it might be that special kind of terrible.
- 04. THE 5TH WAVE
Whatever happened to Dakota Fanning’s career? Sorry, I recently watched Man On Fire again and it was probably her high water mark. Chloë Grace Moretz is trying really hard not to fall in the same trap, but The 5th Wave isn’t going to be her breakthrough. Hey, at least both are doing better than Haley Joel Osment…
- 05. DADDY’S HOME
Ranked at 5th for a second week, this is also the 5th best performing movie for both Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. Spooky.
- 06. THE REVENANT (incl Imax)
You know what disappoints me about The Revenant? Everyone is going on about whether they love or hate Leo’s performance. But where’s the love for Tom Hardy, who is exceptional in this?
- 07. THE CHOICE
Fate brings playboy guy together with career-strong woman. There, I just wrote a rom-com script.
- 08. NORM OF THE NORTH
Down two spots, Norm is definitely on his way out. His detractors will also be glad to hear that for an animated film this has had a lacklustre performance. But not a terrible one…
- 09. SPOTLIGHT
The poster looks super serious in this real-life drama about journalists uncovering the truth about pedophile priests.
- 10. THE DRESSMAKER
This Australian comedy actually looks good and has a brilliant cast. But at a 1oth spot debut, it’s bound for box office purgatory.
- YOU’RE NOT ON THE LIST
Goodbye, Star Wars and goodbye Rey, the most singularly annoying, boring, predictable, characterless character I’ve seen in a long time. Let’s be honest: if Star Wars was so excellent, why did it need all that nostalgia to prop it up? But at least it did better than Hateful Eight, which was around for one week. One week… for a Tarantino movie. That’s just awful. Alvin & The Chipmunks also bows out after a solid run, while The Good Dinosaur limps away as Pixar’s worst-ever performer.

Agreed on Tom Hardy, he always manages to make the greatest actors look great but somehow outshines them. I eventually found myself watching Peaky Blinders just for his brand of awesome and that is a great series with an outstanding cast imo.

That’s been on my watch list for a while. I just keep hearing good things about it.
