Tim Burton’s career has had some ups and downs in the last few years. While the highs like Frankenweenie have been very high, the lows like Dark Shadows have been very, very low. And even though Alice in Wonderland coined it for Disney, the reins of director were instead passed to James Bobin.

When it comes to making incredible fantasy worlds on screen however, Burton is still a go-to guy. Like I pointed out, what more Burton-esque could you get than a period piece with strange children that have stranger gifts? This kind of story needs his particular style, and honestly if this weren’t live action I would have still expected him to at least direct the stop-motion version. Think I’m joking? Check out the first official trailer below and tell me this isn’t the most Burton movie you’ve seen so far.

From visionary director Tim Burton, and based upon the best-selling novel, comes an unforgettable motion picture experience. When Jake discovers clues to a mystery that spans alternate realities and times, he uncovers a secret refuge known as Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As he learns about the residents and their unusual abilities, Jake realizes that safety is an illusion, and danger lurks in the form of powerful, hidden enemies. Jake must figure out who is real, who can be trusted, and who he really is.

Oh yes, that’s definitely a Tim Burton movie. But even though the plot looks like it’s going to follow the very well-trodden path of “young child with undiscovered powers is destined to save the world”, I have some middling-to-high hopes for it. The visuals are gorgeous, the acting seems like it’s not overdone, and the story is fairly interesting so far. We’ll see how it goes.

Starring Eva Green as the titular Miss Peregrine, Asa Butterfield as the hero Jake, as well as Dame Judi Dench, Ella Purnell, Allison Janney, Terence Stamp, Rupert Everett, Kim Dickens, and Samuel L. Jackson, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is scheduled for release on September 30, 2015
