Looking back – way, way back – who could ever have predicted that the dad from beloved sitcom Malcolm In the Middle would eventually go on to become one of the most potent actors in Hollywood? One Breaking Bad later though and that’s exactly what’s happened with Bryan Cranston though.

And for the latest display of the actor’s incredible thespian talents (assisted by some amazing make-up work), the multiple Emmy and Golden Globe winner, fresh off his first Oscar nomination for Trumbo, is returning to a role that’s already garnered him some awards gold. In this case, it was a Tony Award for his portrayal of American President Lyndon B. Johnson, the untimely successor to the assassinated John F. Kennedy, in Robert Schenkkan’s acclaimed Broadway play All the Way.

Now director Jay Roach – no stranger to charged political fare after giving us the brilliant Sarah Palin biopic Game Change – has adapted the play as a feature film for HBO with Cranston back as Johnson. Joining him is Anthony Mackie as Martin Luther King Jr. – who had several electric meetings and confrontations with Johnson to usher in the monumental Civil Rights Act in 1964 – and Melissa Leo as First Lady Bird Johnson.

And based on this crackling first trailer for All the Way, Cranston and co are firing on all cylinders to tell this tale. If Roach can manage to bring that same amazing balance of emotional and intellectual intensity that he did to Game Change, then this looks it could be a hell of a watch.

Check out the trailer below.

All the Way airs in the US on HBO on May 21, 2016. Hopefully we won’t have long to wait before it hits local screens.
