Rumour: SUICIDE SQUAD doing major reshoots to make it more fun

Remember those absolutely incredible trailers for Suicide Squad? The ones scored to Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody and just filled with all those fantastic character moments which looked like a crazy amount of fun? Well, yeah about that… It seems that was maybe a lie.

At least that’s according to BMD‘s Devin Faraci who has heard from an “excellent source” that we may have been hoodwinked by those trailers as the actual movie is nowhere near as fun. To be exact, the source indicates that “Every joke in the movie is in that trailer”. Huh. Luckily though it seems that the suits over in the Warner Bros boardrooms were miraculously not deaf to the massive roar of approval those trailers got from fans, as they’ve reportedly since ordered massive reshoots to up the fun quotient of the movie and bring it in line with the product that those trailers were actually selling.

Faraci has confirmed with multiple other sources that writer/director David Ayer is actually busy with reshoots right now, and they’re apparently no minor thing. Faraci reports that the reshoots are “tens of millions of dollars big” and their intention is not to rewrite the plot direction in anyway but to add “more humor and lightness into the film”. This will reportedly not just be random jokes dropped into the script (luckily), but instead come in the form of “beefed up” character moments and more fun interactions between the cast.

As Faraci points out, if this is true – and judging by the amount of other publications who seemed to have heard the same thing from their sources, I’m going to give it the benefit of the doubt – then it’s actually comforting knowledge that the WB execs are in fact listening and responding to fan feedback about their product. You could argue that they actually did the same thing with Man of Steel as Batman v Superman was chock full of set pieces and bits of dialogue that seem to directly address some fan criticism leveled at MoS (eg. fighting in unpopulated areas, Superman flying enemies into space, etc).

The real question is whether this will also happen with their upcoming slate of moviesScreenwriter Chris Terrio has already indicated that Justice League is not going to be as dark as Batman v Superman – the grimness of which did not appeal to some – and Aquaman director James Wan also recently spoke about how his solo movie would be embracing the fun side of the character. Could it be that this is the start of some creative paradigm shift in the DC Comics Cinematic Universe? WB has seemingly tried to stay away from emulating the generally lighter and snarkier Marvel movies to try and do their own thing with their seemingly more mythic DC Comics properties (they were even rumoured to have a “No jokes” policy in place at one stage), but looking at pure critical reception here, maybe they’re now thinking of joining them if they can’t beat them?

What do you guys think? Would you prefer to get a lighter DC Comics Cinematic Universe or do you like that WB are offering something different to what Marvel is doing? And how do you feel about Suicide Squad getting more humorous? Personally, I just can’t believe that a movie has finally come out that actually has me excited to see Jai Courtney star in it.

Fan outcry or because of BvS critical lashback?
