Growing up as a teen in the 90’s, I wasn’t much of a Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers fan (Voltron did it better), so I don’t have any nostalgic excitement whatsoever for the upcoming big screen Power Rangers reboot. I was pretty intrigued by the casting of Elizabeth Banks as villainess Rita Repulsa though.

But for a significant portion of the internet, “intrigued” is not how you would describe their reaction when Banks’ Rita Repulsa costume was unveiled recently. Rita had always been nothing more than a cranky and crazy old space witch, but all of a sudden the pyramidal brassier, frumpy dress and crazy grey hairdo was gone. And for a large contingent of fans, deviating from that iconic look was insult enough, but for many others the transgression was taken into proper offensive territory by a sexed up Banks in what is essentially nothing more than an emerald bikini with sleeves and spiky accessories.

To be fair though, there is definitely an argument to be made against Hollywood’s decades-long needless over-sexualization of female roles. Whether you want to make it about a movie featuring a bunch of kids in creepy face masks and leotards who can never talk without synchronized rapid arm movements is up to you though.

Either way, thanks to JustJared, you can take a long look at/grind your teeth at Banks’ Rita getup in a batch of new set pics that shows the actress in action during a big scene.

Saban’s “Power Rangers” follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.

Power Rangers is directed by Dean Israelite (Project Almanac) and also stars Dacre Montgomery, RJ Cyler, Naomi Scott, Becky G and Ludi Lin. It is scheduled for release on March 24, 2017.

Love how fans, who are 20 years older now, still hold onto what they liked as children. Grow up 😛
