In 2007, Mark Wahlberg starred in a film called Shooter, which was based off a book Point of Impact by Stephen Hunter. And now the story about an expert marksman who is being framed for killing the president is being adapted into a TV series, this time starring Ryan Philippe in the title role. The trailer for it has just been released giving us a first look of what we can expect from the series:

The film had a decent plot, but was not the most exciting of movies and did run a little short on moments on suspense, so it will be interesting to see what they have changed for the series to keep the story interesting for a lot longer. I’ve never read the book, so there may be a lot of stuff that the movie missed out on, though they will likely need to add a whole host of characters and situations to keep it interesting.

So this new Shooter is not something that I’m super excited about, but Phillippe is a good lead for this series and the writer and director are no strangers to creating good material. It could be quiet interesting if they can keep the suspense from the trailer going through each episode.

In addition to Phillippe, the cast includes Omar Epps, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Tembi Locke, Shantel Van Santen, and David Marciano. The show itself is executive produced by Mark Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson and Lorenzo di Bonaventura with John Hlavin (The Shield) scripting the pilot and Simon Cellan Jones (Jessica Jones) directing it.

The series is expected to premiere in the American fall (our spring), though no official release date has been provided yet.

The official synopsis of the series is:

Shooter is an uncompromising exploration of the definition and evolution of a hero. Ryan Phillippe (“Secrets and Lies”) is a producer on the project and will star as Bob Lee Swagger, an expert marksman living in exile who is coaxed back into action after learning of a plot to kill the president. Omar Epps (“House”) plays Isaac Johnson, an ex-Marine and former commanding officer of Swagger. Now a Secret Service Agent, he solicits Swagger’s expertise for a clandestine operation that has disastrous results.

Mmm…it looks like it could be a decent action series, but as you say, they need to keep the suspense going, along with a decent plot line / twist or two, otherwise this will turn into a generic “who framed Bobby Lee Swagger”.
