Robotech! If you can remember that classic cartoon, then you’re probably wondering why this story isn’t being simulcast in another language on Radio 2000 right now. That 1980’s cartoon series was a gateway drug into anime for many a kid, with its magnificent characters, world and most importantly, gigantic transforming robots.
Back in February, the rights to the franchise had been picked up by Hollywood Gang, with the film looking to be a new Warner Bros property and Mama director Andy Muschietti attached. Well Robotech is changing distributor hands right now as it heads to Sony, who want the film fast-tracked into production ASAP.
Doug Belgrad, Michael De Luca and Matthew Milam will shepherd the Robotech movie at the studio. De Luca commented:
“Robotech is unique in that it has always been a marriage of spectacle with human characters that seem drawn from life. That’s why we are so excited to be working with Mark and Gianni as we move forward on this project. With a history that offers an epic love triangle, a renegade hero, and a world on the brink of extinction, Robotech offers a wide scope and a rich and impressive universe where the story possibilities are endless.”
Man, I can’t wait. Robotech is about as epic an anime as you can find, setting the bar for spiritual successors in the years to come. And if Sony sees potential in it as a possible new franchise, then all the better.
