Ace Ventura 3 in development from Sonic the Hedgehog writers

When it comes to comedy, there were few actors who were as successful as Jim Carrey in the 1990s with his brand of buffoonish slapstick humour and outrageous characters. No character displayed his brand of wild comedy better than that of a certain pet detective by the name of Ace Ventura. Despite being unpopular with critics, both films found massive box office success, were packed with raucous humour, and are still funny two decades later.

Carrey has focused a lot more on dramatic offerings since the glory days of his comedy outings, which given his massive talent, he is still comfortable doing. When he decided to return to his usual brand of comedy in last year’s Sonic the Hedgehog movie, playing the role of Doctor Robotnik, it was a breath of fresh air and a performance that reminded the world just how funny Carrey is.

And it seems like that performance was enough to convince audiences that we need more of that Jim Carrey in our lives, as Morgan Creek, the production company behind the Ace Ventura movies, confirming to Park Circus that a third movie is in development for Amazon and the writers behind Sonic the Hedgehog writers reportedly working on the script:

Titles such as Ace Ventura, Major League, Young Guns, Dead Ringers, Diabolique, and Nightbreed are a few examples of multi-platform projects on the fast-track for reinvention. COVID, audiences have been in love and are thrilled to have beloved characters brought back with new stories. Ace Ventura will see a new day at Amazon as a major motion-picture/theatrical with the Sonic the Hedgehog writers.

And if you needed a reminder of how great Ace Ventura was, take a look at this video below of some of his best quotes:

Alllllllrighty then. Well, that is fantastic news for anyone who grew up during Carrey’s era of fame and if the script can allow the actor to return to his best, then we are in for a treat. The article does not actually confirm that Carrey is in the movie however, although given the iconic nature of his character, they would be foolish to not bring him back, otherwise, they may as well just call it something else. Though I wouldn’t be surprised if they do try and introduce a younger version of the character, possibly Ventura’s son, to fill in the role for future iterations.

Oh wait:

When Carrey revisited one of his other popular 90s characters in Dumb and Dumber To, it didn’t go down so well thanks to a terrible script and an overreliance on gags that simply weren’t funny. Let’s hope Ace Ventura 3 doesn’t make the same mistake and gives us the vintage Carrey that the world sorely needs right now.
