Whenever you see Adam Sandler’s name attached to a project you almost cringe at the prospect of how low or stupid the next film is going to be. It’s not that he is necessarily a bad actor, he has put in quite a few good performances over the years (Punch Drunk Love and Spanglish being his most recent good dramatic performances), they are just many years apart and he fills up these gaps with stupid stuff that just makes way too much money, which is no wonder why he keeps on doing it.
This next movie which his name is attached to promises to be a little different as it sees him team up with Ben Stiller and filmmaker Noah Baumbach. For those of you not familiar with Baumbach’s work – he is anything but mainstream and tends to make weird productions that aren’t exactly aimed to be audience friendly. His most recent films released last year Mistress America and While We’re Young were both dramas which featured unusual characters, obscure dialogue and a slow, but deliberate pacing. Not riveting stuff, but something that did pull out strong performances from the cast at least and very different from what you would typically see from an Adam Sandler film. And his new project appears to be no different, titled Yen Din Ka Kissa (Hindi for The Story of the Day) which is an unusual name for an English film based in New York.
The film is set to reunite Baumbach with his While We’re Young star Ben Stiller and will also star Dustin Hoffman, Emma Thompson and Grace van Patten centers on an estranged New York family coming together in preparation of artist and patriarch Harold’s career retrospective According to The Film Stage, Hoffman will portray Harold and Thompson will be playing a dreadful, passive-aggressive alcoholic. Outside of that, we don’t know much else about the film or what role Stiller and in particular Sandler will be playing in the film.
This film being set in New York is not uncommon for Baumbach, who has based and filmed many of his films in the city – most recently in While We’re Young, but also The Squid and the Whale and Frances Ha, so it will be usual territory for him. However he may have his biggest challenge on his hands in getting a rousing and strong dramatic performance from Sandler and hopefully bringing us a reminder of that hidden talent lying somewhere – deep…
Baumbach is known for being prolific and is able to release films every 6 months or so – but if he can get us to believe that Sandler can act again – that is something that happens only a few times in life.
