When it comes to the upcoming 5th Bourne movie, we’ve seen a campaign of misinformation and subterfuge the likes of which is normally reserved for keeping super-assassins in the dark about their true identities. Right now, the only thing we know for sure is that star Matt Damon and The Bourne Ultimatum and The Bourne Supremacy director/co-writer Paul Greengrass is back for the next installment, but it will not see Damon’s Jason Bourne crossing over – as many fans had hoped – with Jeremy Renner’s Aaron Cross, who led the most recent spinoff The Bourne Legacy.
But now we know that Damon and Greengrass won’t be the only familiar faces returning as Julia Stiles is also getting re-Bourne. No, I won’t apologize for that horrible pun and you can’t make me.
Deadline are reporting that Stiles will be reprising her role as Nicky Parsons, a role she played in the first 3 movies in the franchise. Stiles’ Parsons, an undercover Treadstone operative assigned to monitor their assassins, was often the only one that Damon’s Bourne could rely on during his trilogy and was a solid addition to the franchise by not just falling into the generic helpless damsel female co-star hole. It was hinted at in The Bourne Supremacy that she and Bourne knew each other much more intimately before he experienced his amnesia, which could be one of the reasons why she helps him and also something that could be explored in the next film.
Deadline are also reporting that current Hollywood It-girl Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, The Man from U.N.C.L.E.) is being sort for an undisclosed role, but there’s no confirmation on her involvement at this point.
Meanwhile The Wrap’s usually reliable Jeff Sneider has tweeted the very enticing nugget that Viggo Mortensen has been offered the role of the main bad guy in the movie. There are no details as to the identity of this villain, but as a huge fan of Eastern Promises, I’m hoping that Damon and Mortensen have themselves a vicious sauna fight at some point during the movie. The “being butt naked” part is optional, though I have a feeling that this will certainly appeal to a large portion of either man’s fanbase.
In all seriousness though, although the Lord of the Rings actor has never really got an opportunity to flex his bad guy muscles on-screen before, I think Mortensen could make a superb foil for Damon’s Bourne.
The still untitled Bourne 5 is scheduled for released on July 29, 2016.
