Over the last few years, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has basically been Hollywood’s viagra, giving flagging franchise’s a massive pick-me up with his presence. When his Agent Luke Hobb’s debuted in Fast Five, he didn’t just help that become the best entry by far in the Fast & Furious franchise (which since then has grown from strength to strength as Universal’s biggest property) but he also became a massive fan favourite. His subsequent reappearances as Hobbs has just cemented that sentiment, with his unerring talent for both massive action and those brilliant one-liners.

And now Johnson has taken to Instagram to reveal the badass first look at Hobbs in the upcoming Fast 8, and it looks like things have definitely changed for the usually militaristic action hero.

Damn, he looks mean! Even meaner than normal!

While Johnson’s description of Hobbs as a man that has been stripped of all he has, and who has subsequently been forced to a very dangerous position, it’s the comment sandwiched into the middle of everything that should get fans most excited: “Maybe it’s a spinoff movie”. With the franchise having earned Universal just shy of $4 billion in total, there’s just no way that the franchise aren’t looking at more ways to leverage it for even more box office income. And if there’s ever a character in the Fast & Furious lineup who could carry a movie on his own, it’s Johnson’s Luke Hobbs.

This is a sentiment that is apparently shared by the Universal execs, as consulting producer Hiram Garcia (part of Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions) told ComicBook.com:

“I think there’s always been conversations for that. The scheduling of it all is a challenge but there are always talks about a potential spinoff movie and what we can do with it. DJ and I were just talking about that the other day – our visions for it. There’s a real goal for that and we can have enough fun with that where we’ve earned that now with the audience. He’s a beloved enough character that they’d love to see what a ride with him would be like in his world. We have tons of history that we’ve crafted for this guy that we continue to sprinkle in throughout the movies. You’ll see a little bit more in this movie but ultimately we want to take that ride and spin him off and have some fun with it.”

Even if the spinoff movie doesn’t happen – and I really hope it does – it looks like Fast 8 is going to give him a much bigger platform than Furious 7, where he was resigned to only a couple of scenes (though there were some of the film’s best).

“I’ve been in the mix with Chris Morgan, the writer, really dialing in the Hobbs character, which is one of our all-time favorite characters…On the last movie, due to schedule restraints, we were only able to play on it for a couple weeks… In this one, we’re really spread throughout the movie, so it’s great to be back up here and we’ll be back on set on Wednesday.”

So would you like to see a Hobbs spinoff solo movie? Or maybe there’s another Fast & Furious character that you would like to see get his/her own movie? Sound off below!

Fast 8 is currently in production and is being directed by Straight Outta Compton and The Italian Job‘s F. Gary Gray, and sees the return of Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris Bridges, Lucas Black, Kurt Russell and Jason Statham. Scott Eastwood joins the production as an unnamed law enforcement agent and Charlize Theron will play Cipher, the film’s main villain, while Game of Thrones‘ Kristofer Hivju will play her henchman. It is scheduled for release on April 14, 2017.
