If there’s one thing that is rare in animated movies these days, it’s a sense of adventure. I’ve spoken plenty of times before about how movies these days are over reliant on the whole “be true to yourself” schtick, but it’s something that just isn’t going to go away anytime soon.
And I mean it. Take a look at any big screen animated movie of the last five years, and you’ll see that theme woven into it. Which is why I’m hoping that Epic can ditch the self discovery, and focus on the adventure, which it does oh so well in the latest trailer.
“Epic” is a 3D CG action-adventure comedy that reveals a hidden world unlike any other. From the creators of “Ice Age” and “Rio,” “Epic” tells the story of an ongoing battle deep in the forest between the forces of good and the forces of evil. When a teen age girl finds herself magically transported into this secret universe, she must band together with a rag-tag team of fun and whimsical characters in order to save their world…and ours.
I’m liking the look of this film so far. It reminds me quite a bit of the classic Ferngully, but without Robin Williams. Which sometimes, is a good thing. Epic is out at the end of May, and stars the voices of Beyonce Knowles, Colin Farrell, Josh Hutcherson, Amanda Seyfried and Christoph Waltz. Chris Wedge directs.
