First look at FOX's new Rocky Horror Picture Show

I reported a while ago (admittedly with a slight distaste in the mouth) that once again a holy piece of art was heading for the remake-block (tm pending). I was, like Trevor on a daily basis, confused and felt lost. You see I love the original movie of Richard O’Brian’s. It is funny, sexy and was way ahead of its time. It also cemented Tim Curry to the history books, much to his subsequent type-casted dismay. Well Fox is nearly finished with its own version of the titular movie and I am still not that sure I am comfortable with a remake. I mean let’s be honest. The movie is an adaptation of the stage play. So this would be a television adaptation/remake of the movie adaptation of the stage play. That’s just too much damn adaptation in one sentence! Anyway, have a look at the new cast and see what you think…

Kenny Ortega of High School Musical fame will  direct the new version with transgender actress Laverne Cox (Orange is the New Black) taking up the role as Dr. Frank-N-Furter. I’m not so sure of the new look though. It isn’t that ‘risque’, not when you compare Curry’s version in the 70’s. Also judging by the just released trailer there is VERY little ‘UMPH’ from Cox’ Have a watch and see what I mean…

Why is Frank-n-Furter wearing a cow? I also think Riff Raff looks like he’s trying too hard to be Richard O’Brian as that is literally a copy of how he meets the poor newly weds… It definitely has CAMP stamped all over it but I must say it also looks, I don’t know, cheap? As in, pantomime-level quality reminding me of a school production. Still, perhaps I am just stuck in the past!

I am not too familiar with the cast, which is a good thing I think; it offers a blank slate of sorts. Alongside Cox will be Ryan McCartan (Brad), Victoria Justice (Janet), Ben Vereen (Dr. Scott), Reeve Carney (Riff Raff), Annaleigh Ashford (Columbia). Christina Milian (Magenta) and Staz Nair as the ‘perfect’ Rocky.

I have been an avid fan of movies ever since I discovered Santa Clause wasn't real, a day marked in my memory by my first viewing of It's a Wonderful Life, which wasn't so wonderful that day. Since then I've watched thousands of movies and even fooled my parents into putting me through uni to get a degree in the subject. I first started writing as a journalist for The South African Newspaper before moving onto communications for an NGO trying to save the planet. Unfortunately my recommendations to the CEO that we should all don rings imbued with the powers of earth, fire, wind, water and HEART went unheard. Now I pretend the end isn't nigh by hiding in movies.
