The fact that Frank Grillo is not yet a household name in action circles, is kind of a travesty. Not only is he a more than capable actor, but he’s the kind of performer who can easily balance both emotional and physical work in one role.
Grillo got a chance to flex those muscles in The Purge 2: Anarchy, a sequel to the first flick wherein any and all crime is legal for 12 hours once a day. Naturally, in a world where such a law occurs, things quickly go pear-shaped as humanity descends into full-on chaos mode and run rampant.
While the first Purge movie was more of a home invasion horror flick, the sequel added more action to the stakes as Grillo’s Sergeant character set out to get some sweet revenge and found himself being a hero on the worst night of the year.
And it worked, it freakin’ worked beautifully. Some may hate The Purge 2: Anarchy, but I loved the different tone and direction, thanks to Grillo completely selling the film with his performance. Now, Variety reports that Grillo is in final negotiations to return for The Purge 3.
And if the sequel is another action flick, then I’m going to be all too happy to see it. It’s the one film franchise that Grillo has had the opportunity to lead, after popping up in supporting roles in films such as Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Warrior.
Series creator James DeMonaco is also back on board to write and direct the The Purge 3, which will hopefully carry on and focus on Sergeant as he decides to tackle another Purge night. Oh man, I’m gathering canned goods and candles in anticipation for this.
