Google reveals most searched movies of 2014

1 min read

It’s that time of the year again. No, not of shopping mall Christmas carols and rowdy holiday crowds (though, yes, those too). Instead I’m talking about Google’s annual lists of the top search terms for the year. Naturally that includes movies and though South Africa didn’t specifically get treated with a top movie searches list, we do know what the world was into. The most searched for movies of 2014 were:

1. Frozen
2. Interstellar
3. Divergent
4. Gone Girl
5. Lone Survivor
6. Godzilla
7. 22 Jump Street
8. Big Hero 6
9. Annabelle
10. Maleficent

Following up on Kervyn’s recent top trailers of the year, here are the most searched-for trailers:

1. Gone Girl trailer
2. Interstellar trailer
3. Divergent trailer
4. Frozen trailer
5. The Lego Movie trailer
6. The Avengers 2 trailer
7. Godzilla trailer
8. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 Trailer
9. Annabelle trailer
10. Maleficent trailer

The main television shows, though not in any particular order:

Game of Thrones
No, You Shut Up!
True Detective
Orange is the New Black
Blood, Sweat & Heels
The Following
House of Cards
South Park
American Horror Story

The top trending actresses (though I do prefer just calling them all actors):

1. Jennifer Lawrence
2. Renee Zellweger
3. Betty White
4. Ellen Page
5. Kim Novak
6. Margot Robbie
7. Jacqueline Bisset
8. Lena Dunham
9. Melanie Griffith
10. Lea Thompson

And finally, the most searched actors:

1. Jared Leto
2. Matthew McConaughey
3. Macaulay Culkin
4. Chris Pratt
5. Theo James
6. Ansel Elgort
7. Jamie Dornan
8. Alfonso Ribeiro
9. James McAvoy
10. Laurence Fishburne

Naturally there is disappointment that no The Movies writers features in any of the top 10s, but I’m sure Google will be sending out updated lists soon…
