There’s a big divide in cultures when it comes to East and West. Our ideas of a horror film are vastly different, as we prefer our promiscuous teenagers to be murdered by hulking death machines with a machete, compared to creepy teenagers in pale flesh making life hell for their victims.
But I think we can all agree that when it comes to monsters, the formula is universal. Big destruction. It’s a simple formula really, and that approach to teasing something massive works wonderfully in this first glimpse at 2014’s Godzilla.
Honestly, that chilled me. Hearing Manhattan Project’s J. Robert Oppenheimer classic quote just ties in perfectly into the atomic-drenched legacy of Godzilla. And even though it’s fleeting, it’s reassuring to see that the king of the monsters isn’t just some big bad lizard causing chaos. He’s a force of nature with an unstoppable appetite for destruction. And that roar. It’s classic, yet refined in the right ways. In other words, this is all that I’ve been wanting from a Godzilla reboot, and I’m optimistic for this movie. Now to start egging Guillermo Del Toro to make a Pacific Rim vs Godzilla film…
Godzilla is out next year, and stars Aaron Taylor Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen and Juliette Binoche . Gareth Edwards directs.
