A Cure for Wellness is not, as I naively hoped, a documentary on the waste of time and money that is trendy (S)CAM “healthcare”, but rather a psychological thriller from The Ring director Gore Verbinski (as well the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies) that does in fact have something to do with water pretending to cure your woes.
The official plot synopsis is as follows:
An ambitious young executive [Dane DeHaan] is sent to retrieve his company’s CEO from an idyllic but mysterious “wellness center” at a remote location in the Swiss Alps. He soon suspects that the spa’s miraculous treatments are not what they seem.
When he begins to unravel its terrifying secrets, his sanity is tested, as he finds himself diagnosed with the same curious illness that keeps all the guests here longing for the cure.
Well, I was well this morning and then I watched this – and my wellness has been cured. Judging by the trailer this looks to be an incredibly creepy movie that presses all the right buttons when it comes to psychological thrillers / horrors – the remote location with its seemingly antiquated equipment, medical experimentation, a young girl, and the questioning of sanity.
Technically it looks great with its muted, washed-out colour palette, and a rather eerie rendition of The Ramones’ classic hit ‘I Wanna Be Sedated’ puts the cherry on top.
What do you think?
A Cure for Wellness is due for release on 17 February 2017. Directed by Gore Verbinksi, and written by Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road), it stars Dane DeHaan, Jason Isaacs, Mia Goth and Celia Imrie.
