Fillion-Guardians

I don’t think there’s a single major geek-flavoured movie of the last few years, where at some point Nathan Fillion wasn’t put forward by fans to play a major role in it. The guy’s natural charm and everyman appeal has earned him a gigantic following who would be pretty content if he just played all the roles in every movie ever. Especially ones involving superheroes. But despite a sorta-kinda step into the superhero world, playing the douchey Captain Hammer in Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, he’s never made the transition into comic book movies.

You would think that having worked for a long time with current Marvel movie emperor Joss Whedon on several projects (including Dr. Horrible), as well as with James Gunn – writer-director of the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy – on Slither, that something would have happened by now already. Well, it seems that something has happened, but we just didn’t know about it.

During a panel at a recent comic convention, Fillion was asked by an audience member if he had wanted to get a part in Guardians, and here’s how he responded:

“Wanting to get a part? Or maybe did. I’m just saying maybe… maybe there’ll be a surprise… maybe check the credits of the movie when you watch it.”

That seems to me like a pretty clear indicator that Fillion is definitely doing something in the movie, although his “check the credits” line would imply that it’s a role you wouldn’t easily recognize him in. Based on Guardians‘ outer space setting, this could mean that we’ll see Fillion as some kind of alien. Whatever role he is going to play, it appeared that it was supposed to be a secret, as Gunn tweeted this soon after Fillion’s comment hit the web.

“There is a cat running around my office let out of his respective bag. I have a feeling @NathanFillion has been in here.”

So yeah, I would definitely be keeping a keen eye out for Fillion when Guardians hits later in the year. If you don’t know how you’ll survive that long, then have this first clip from the film to help tide you over. It’s an extended version of the opening scene seen in the film’s trailer (though, based on its choppiness, it’s probably been edited down for time) and shows us a little bit more of Chris Pratt in action as Peter Quill aka Star Lord.

Along with that clip, a new behind the scenes pic has also popped up online, showing Zoe Saldana (who plays “deadliest woman in the galaxy” Gamora) and Karen Gillan (who plays the villainess, Nebula) preparing for their big fight scene, which is apparently quite the epic brawl. An epic brawl that seemingly needs some more scenes, as this was taken during a session of reshoots that’s currently happening. No need to get too concern about that “reshoots” label, as this has been par for the course on just about every Marvel movie released thus far.

Guardians of the Galaxy stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Michael Rooker, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close and Benicio Del Toro and releases on August 1, 2014.

An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits—Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand—with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

It could also mean that if it is in the credits, maybe they are setting up his (leading) character for a new film after Guardians.
