It's time to cancel the apocalypse in this first trailer for PACIFIC RIM

If there’s one thing that western films have failed to capitalise on, it’s the monster movie genre. The Godzilla remake with Matthew Broderick was the visual equivalent of being slapped in the face with a kaiju penis, while Cloverfield for all its hype and bluster, was essentially a shakey pile of underwhelming promises.

But it looks like Pacific Rim might finally be giving that Japanese dominated genre a run for its money.

Thanks to that trailer, we finally get to see the Jaeger mechs in action, complete with a Portal influenced GLaDOS voice-over, as well as a proper look at the rampaging Kaiju.

They’re big, they’re mean, and they may be more intelligent than originally theorised! Plus, there seems to be an alpha-male Kaiju waiting on the other side of that inter-dimensional rift at the bottom of the ocean, ready to lay down the pain.

It’s looking solid so far, and the visuals seem top-notch. Worth the price of a 3D release? Who knows, but as far as giant robots versus killer monsters go, this one has me excited.

Pacific Rim is out next year July, and stars Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba, Ron Perlman and Charlie Day, with Guillermo Del Toro directing.

That’s what I thought, it’s RahXephon! And Evangelion! (but hopefully without the god-awful ending)
