Say the name Richard Ayoade, and the first response you’re likely to get is “Have you rebooted it yet?”. The IT Crowd funnyman is mostly known for being, well funny, rather than writing and directing dark, existential, dramas starring Jesse Eisenberg as a deeply troubled man who- Waaaaaait a minute! According to the info I have here in front of me, The Double is a comedy? Well, you could have fooled me with this first trailer.
Simon is a timid man, scratching out an isolated existence in an indifferent world. He is overlooked at work, scorned by his mother, and ignored by the woman of his dreams. The arrival of a new co-worker, James, serves to upset the balance. James is both Simon’s exact physical double and his opposite — confident, charismatic and good with women. To Simon’s horror, James slowly starts taking over his life.
Yeah, that doesn’t quite look like a comedy to me, but then again, I’ve been known to be wrong in the past (it’s how Darryn ended up working here, after all). Despite what I mentioned up top, Ayoade has proven himself to be quite the accomplished jack of all trades. His previous feature film directing effort, Submarine, was quite the good mix of drama and comedy, so hopefully this will continue that trend. He certainly has the cast, in Jesse Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska, to pull it off.
The Double currently doesn’t have a release date.
