JK Simmons wants to make Commissioner Gordon a badass in Justice League

Gordon (1)

A lot of people tend to forget that Batman isn’t the only badass in town. Gotham City’s own police commissioner Jim Gordon happens to also be able to kick a fair amount of rear, a role that for many, many years was pretty much swept under the rug as he spent most of his nights wondering how the hell Batman does that vanishing trick every night.

But here’s the thing: Gordon isn’t a pushover. He eats  green berets for breakfast, and cunningly ruthless if you read Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One mini-series. Not only that, but he actually filled in for the dark knight when he went missing after the fallout from the Joker’s endgame event. Not a guy that you want to mess with. And that’s the Jim Gordon that actor J.K Simmons wants to portray in the upcoming Justice League movie, seeing as how he happens to be swole as f*** lately.

“People of my generation remember Commissioner Gordon as this jolly, ineffectual Santa Claus type, and I think over the years in the comics there’s definitely much more of a badass side to him,” Simmons said to EW.

One of the things that’s interesting to me is investigating hopefully a little bit more of that badass [side]…You’re living in a universe where it’s pretty tough to be a badass compared to somebody like Batman, but in the universe of non-superheroes I like the idea of Commissioner Gordon as a guy that can take care of himself, a guy that’s a real partner to Batman, not just a guy that turns on the bat signal and goes, ‘Help! Help, Batman!’

And I think we’re going to see some of that badassery in action. Director Zack Snyder is pretty much the biggest Frank Miller fanboy around, having used plenty of his Batman work to craft Batman V Superman. Combined with Simmons talent as one of the best actors in Hollywood today, and even if the role is only for a few minutes of screen time, I think we’re going to get a special performance when Justice League drops next year November.

Also, I’m hoping that Simmons yells at officer Parker that he needs pictures of Batman, while puffing a cigar.
