Lindsay Lohan gets trippy with a porn star in this Grindhouse teaser trailer for THE CANYONS

Well, that was… unexpected.

Writer Bret “American Psycho” Easton Ellis  and director Paul “Auto-Focus” Schrader’s modern noir thriller The Canyons was always going to be a bit weird. Firstly there was the fact that starring opposite professional downward spiral skier Lindsay Lohan, was human tripod porn star James Deen. On top of that was recent news that writer/director (but not actor) Gus Van Sant would have a supporting role.

But now comes the trailer for the film, and it’s gone all Grindhouse for some reason.

THE CANYONS is a contemporary L.A. noir from director Paul Schrader, writer Bret Easton Ellis, and producer Braxton Pope about the dangers of sexual obsession and ambition, both personally and professionally, among a group of young people in their 20’s and how one chance meeting connected to the past unravels all of their lives, resulting in deceit, paranoia, cruel mind games and ultimately violence.

Now just so that we’re clear, the movie is not a Grindhouse type film, just this trailer. And with it’s complete lack of dialogue and stylized look, it’s not easy getting a grip on the story, but I am getting a bit of that American Psycho vibe coming through.

Having never seen Deen’s… ahem… “previous work”, I can’t really vouch for his acting abilities (though I’m guessing the line “Did you call for a plumber?” doesn’t take all that much), and Lohan can be incredibly hit and miss sometimes, so lets hope she brings her A-game this time.

There’s no release date for the film yet, but as per the film’s Facebook page (also the origin of this trailer) a complete cut of the film already exists and has been shown to Lohan herself, so expect the film to start getting shopped around at film festivals soon.
