Most locally produced films are pretty much reserved for the worst offenders in hell, those people who are seen as bigger scum than puppy-stranglers and the guys who write lyrics for Afrikaans Justin Bieber style single tunes. But lately, the industry has started to shove out a few diamonds from all that excrement.
Dredd 3D was shot on location here, bringing the gritty glory of Mega City One to the big screen. And the story of our first democratically elected president also had the cameras rolling around the country. And apaprently, it’s going to be one of the best films of the year.
“It was made with a great deal of passion by the many thousands of people in front of and behind the camera,” British filmmaker Justin Chadwick said to EWN at the Toronto Film Festival over the weekend. “I hope that South Africans believe it and find it true because that was certainly at the forefront of my mind.”
The film got plenty of kudos, and a standing ovation at the TFF. Starring Idris Elba as the former president and freedom fighter, Long Walk to Freedom also includes Naomie Harris, Riaad Moosa, Terry Pheto, Tony Kgoroge, Deon Lotz and Lindiwe Matshikiza and is due out in November.
Until then, you’re going to need to either rewatch the trailer, or check out the photos of the cast and crew from the Toronoto showing.
