MARRIED…WITH CHILDREN could return as a spin-off show

Married with children

Love and marriage, love and marriage, it’s an institute you can’t disparage! Growing up, I used to love watching Married…With Children. Al Bundy was an unappreciated genius, I had a strange crush on Peg Bundy and the storylines made me realise that I never ever want to be a shoe salesman. Man, the 1990s were weird. The show has been off the air for many, many years now. But it seems like you can’t keep a bad marriage down, as a spin-off might be resurfacing soon.

That’s according to E!, who say that Bud Bundy (David Faustino) might be the lead in a new series for a new generation. It’s strictly in the concept phase for now, but it might have a few things going for it. One, networks are cheap when it comes to imagination and the nostalgia for old shows being revived is at a high now thanks to the Boy Meets World spin-off Girl Meets World gettign a second season while Full House also prepares to return to TV.

The show was a massive hit when it first started in 1987, and ran until 1997 over 11 seasons. Ed O’Neill spun out of that to get a killer deal on Modern Family, Katey Sagal became a star in other shows such as Sons Of Anarchy and Christina Applegate has been in numerous other projects since then.

Faustino has been the lesser seen of the quartet, but he has had work, also doing some voiceover gigs, such as voicing Mako in The Legend Of Korra. I’d actually dig to see him back on the screen. Because he’s certainly earned it.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to pitch a reboot of Golden Girls to the networks, that would star myself and the rest of the crew here.

If this is going to work, it has to be edgy. MWC was a brutal parody of all the family-centric sitcoms of the day like Family Ties, Growing Pains and Facts Of Life. That will be a hard job in today’s comedy environment, though I’d be open to a sitcom that parodies the trend of weird anchor characters like BBT’s Sheldon or HIMYM’s Barney. Except make the group really callous and make the anchor character truly dangerous and destructive. Call it Best Psycho Forever and make the running gag all about hiding your cats.
