I waxed lyrical yesterday on how I’d like to see traditional television content models die a horrible and painful death so that content providers such as Netflix could take over. And it looks like they’ve managed to attract even more talent to their network in the form of the Wachowski siblings.
The siblings have a new show to pitch, and Netflix obviously digs the concept behind Sense8. Here’s what it’s all about.
“Sense8 will focus on eight people scattered around the globe who are connected by a shared violent vision. Each episode will follow the characters’ separate stories, with one entity attempting to unite them while another tries to kill them,” reads the description from TV Line.
The cast of characters that are getting a power boost? According to sources viewers can expect “a closeted Mexican telenovela hunk, an Icelandic party girl, a German safe-cracker, a Korean businesswoman, an African bus driver and a transgender American blogger. Perhaps most intriguing, though, are Jonas, an apparently magic African-American who appears to all of the “visionaries,” and his evil counterpart, Mr. Whispers.”
That’s a pretty diverse cast up there, and not something that you’d see on primetime TV. Production kicks off in June, with J Michael “Babylon 5” Stracynzski joining the Wachowski’s to help flesh the world of Sense8 out as they shoot around the world. Current locations include the UK, Seoul, Mumbai, Nairobi, Berlin, Mexico City, San Francisco and Chicago.
