While Captain America: Civil War may be drawing all the headlines with it’s Spider-Men and hot hero on hero action (not like that, perverts!), you would do well to remember that there’s another Marvel-ous comic book movie coming out this year. We’ve yet to see a trailer for Doctor Strange, and that situation isn’t changing one bit today. However, thanks Just Jared, Getty’s Images and ComingSoon, what we do get are a number of set pics giving us the best look yet at Benedict Cumberbatch in full costume as the titular Sorcerer Supreme as he filmed an action scene in New York (complete with trademark finger-bending gestures and what looks like some pre-VFX flying).
Along with Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange, we also get a proper look at Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo. In the original comics, Mordo and Strange were both students of the Ancient One, but fueled by jealousy and rage Mordo would become Strange’s arch-enemy. This cinematic version though will not be the main antagonist but apparently be a lot more morally ambivalent so you’re not quite sure which way he is going to go. The still unannounce prime villain role is believed to be played by the incredible Mads Mikkelsen – Yes, this movie is Sherlock Holmes and the Operative teaming up to beat Hannibal Lecter!
Damn, Cumberbatch really does look the part, and I just cannot wait for this! You can check out a whole lot more of the pics at the links above.
UPDATE! Since the time of writing for this article, a couple more snaps from the New York shoot have surfaced (via CBM), actually giving us our first look at Mikkelsen’s villain. It’s still unclear just who he will be playing (some are speculating he’ll be the demonic Dormammu), but there’s no denying that is creepy cool eye makeup!
On top of that, director Scott Derrickson has also announced that with this scene now done and in the can, principal photography on Doctor Strange has now officially wrapped. Now it’s on to the intense post-production portion of the film.
