The names Hayden Christensen and Nicolas Cage emblazoned together on a movie poster tends to not elicit much confidence. But let’s not forget that while Cage has become a human Internet meme generator, he is also an Oscar winning actor who can still turn the right material into a very compelling performance (he most recently did this in Joe), and Christensen… well, there was… er, didn’t he?…. wait, just give me a minute here……. Okay, so I got nothing, but damn that Nicolas Cage was good in Leaving Las Vegas, right?!

Unfortunately, I have a feeling I won’t be saying the same thing after watching Outcast, a new 13th-century China-set sword and sandal action piece. The first trailer has just dropped and it boasts dodgy accents, crazy laughs, constipated expressions and Cage and Christensen going head to head in a worst medieval haircut competition.

When the heir of the Chinese Imperial throne becomes the target of assassination by his despised older brother, the young prince’s only hope is the protection of his sister, and the reluctant aid of war-weary Crusader, Arken (Hayden Christensen), who must overcome his own personal demons and rally the assistance of the legendary Crusader-turned-bandit, Gallain (Nicolas Cage), to return the prince to his rightful place on the throne.

Outcast was directed by Nick Powell, a stuntman and 2nd unit director on such flicks as Gladiator, The Last SamuraiThree Musketeers and Resident Evil: Retribution. It also stars Liu Yifei, Summer Jikejunyi and Andy On, and is scheduled for release in China on September 26, 2014, while only getting a further international release on February 27, 2015.
