Paul Giammati talks about the Rhino in AMAZING SPIDER-MEN 2

I’ll be honest here: I was underwhelmed by the Amazing Spider-Man. But I’m the kind of guy that wants to give director Marc Webb and his crew a second chance, and now that he’s busy helming a movie that seems to have less studio inteference and less baggage to deal with it, I’m cautiously optimistic for the next Rabobi.

Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone round out a cast that includes Jaime Foxx and Dane DeHaan. But I’ve got a feeling that Paul Giamatti is going to steal the show.

Speaking to the Toronto Sun, Giamatti described how his role as the Rhino allowed him to ham up his performance and slap on some extra-thick accentitude for the role which would see him don a mechanical suit of some kind. “In the comic books of old, he had this suit on that made him look like a rhinoceros, and it made him super strong,” Giamatti said to the Sun.

If there was a bank vault he would just run right through it. Butt through it with his head. And he was not very smart. And I have a particular kind of suit, but I don’t think I’m supposed to talk about it. He’s a Russian mobster. Russians are always good villains. I have an ability to just destroy things. My accent is pretty hammy. I loved doing it. it seemed to me like an opportunity to be as over-the-top hammy as possible. It was really fun.

Giamatti also mentioned that he was “one of several bad guys in the movie”, which makes it sound like we’ll be seeing more than just the ultimate poster-child for anti-poaching and the master of electric boogaloo in this flick. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is out next year, swinging into cinemas from May.

  1. I’m not sure how I feel about more than one villain in a movie, it’s usually overkill and messes everything up. But, I enjoy the new Spider-Man without Tobey McNugget and The Rhino could be awesome.
All I really want though is to see The Scorpion.

    “Russians are always good villains.”

This man knows what he’s talking about
