Peter-Jackson-Steven-Spielberg

There is some exciting news that was revealed to the movie world recently. The good news is that Peter Jackson is working on a new movie. The even better news is that it won’t be another Hobbit movie, so we have something fresh to finally look forward to from him. It has been reported that Jackson will be teaming up with Steven Spielberg for a new secret movie for Amblin entertainment. And this movie isn’t the Tintin sequel we all knew was still on its way.

The news comes from Mr Spielberg himself who broke the news while speaking to TimeOut and which was reported on by the New Zealand Herald.

Peter was so busy with ‘The Hobbit’ that it took him away from ‘Tintin’ and he’s doing another film for my company now. It’s a secret, nobody knows about it. Then after that he’ll do ‘Tintin.

Well, its not a secret anymore now that he let it all out the bag. We don’t know anything at present about this film, other than that it will be called Prisoners of the Sun. There is no release date or any further details on what the film is about, but Spielberg did go on to confirm that they have the script in place:

We already have a screenplay, Peter’s the director and I’m the producer.

Now this would not be the first time that Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg have collaborated on a project. They are both huge fans of the comic book series, Tintin and have been working for several years adapting stories from this into the cinema screen. We saw Steven Spielberg’s directorial effort in The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn which Jackson also produced and this will be followed up with another Tintin movie which Jackson will direct and Spielberg will produce. And while the success of their collaboration on the Tintin movies is yet to ultimately prove itself, it is still big news whenever two of Hollywood’s hottest directors team up and decide to make films together.

Tintin

And that is what makes this news so intriguing – and even more so that both have decided to keep it such a secret. The Tintin sequel was also supposed to be filmed closer to the release of the first film, but with Jackson’s commitment to the Hobbit films, it essentially took him away from that series for a number of years and its only recently that he has been able to reengage into other things.

As to the future of the Tintin series of movies, Spielberg had the following to say:

We made a deal to do three ‘Tintin’ movies together. I would direct the first one, Peter would do the second one and then we’d have a director we can’t announce yet lined up for the third one.

So they remain committed to Tintin and although Jackson’s version is going to be pushed back a little, we can still expect two more movies from their original agreement. I’m a huge fan of the Tintin comics and although the first film by Spielberg was not a masterpiece it was still a strikingly good movie and I am looking forward to seeing what Jackson and the next director can do with the character.

What do you make of the new Jackson/Spielberg collaboration? Is it something you are excited for? What do you think Prisoners of the Sun could be about?

A man of many talents, but no sense how to use them. I could be out changing the world, but I'd rather be running, watching movies, playing games and writing here instead.
