Back during the early production days on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, back before the movie’s trailers went into full blown spoiler mode and gave away every possible plot point they could, there were a bunch of different rumours flying around faster than the Man of Steel. One particularly steadfast bit of grapevine chatter involved how this film would setup the inevitable Justice League team-up. We knew that Superman and Batman were going to punch each other, before Wonder Woman would join them in punching something bigger together, but the rumour pitched that we would also see cameos of all the other Justice League members throughout the movie.

For the most part that rumour turned out to be true as we got to see scenes of Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, Ezra Miller’s Flash and Ray Fisher’s Cyborg, all thanks to Lex Luthor and his secret video files (which even had very conveniently superhero logos to them – how nice of him). The part of the rumour that that turned out to be complete emerald hogwash though was that the movie would supposedly feature a surprise appearance by Green Lantern, come to warn the other heroes about some intergalactic threat – more than likely biggest and baddest of big bads in the DC Universe: Darkseid. Well, it appears that rumour may still be true, but it may just have got the movie wrong.

Justice League

Mentioned surprisingly nonchalantly in a recent report by The Wrap (via /Film), it appears that Green Lantern will in fact be showing up in some capacity in the upcoming Justice League. Correction: a Green Lantern will be showing up. I make the distinction because we still don’t actually know who it’s going to be. The comic book superhero is just one of many Green Lanterns, an intergalactic police force created eons ago by the universe’s oldest race, who make use of a highly advanced green ring that allows them to construct virtually anything they can imagine out of emerald light.

Originally in the comics, the central Green Lantern is Earthling test pilot Hal Jordan (well, actually it’s Alan Scott, but that’s too complex to get into right now, so just forget him), who was actually portrayed on film already by Ryan Reynolds in the 2011 Green Lantern movie. A movie that was complete and utter verdant poo and which Warner Bros would probably like you to erase from your memory. We know that WB and DC Comics are developing a movie reboot of the character and have in fact scheduled a Green Lantern Corps movie for 2020. The “Corps” part of that title implies that it will be a movie also focusing on other ringslinging space cops and not just Hal Jordan. The likeliest candidates would be ex-military man Jon Stewart and hothead Guy Gardner. Along with Jordan, Stewart and Gardner were the original three Green Lantern’s of Earth and their difference in personalities would actually make for a great team-up.

But which of them would be showing up in Justice League and why? The smart money would still be on it being Jordan coming to warn the heroes about Darkseid – after all, we already know that the main villain of the film will be Ciaran Hinds’ Steppenwolf, aka Darkseid’s lieutenant. And if there’s anybody that would have had some dealings/knowledge of Darkseid and the forces of the planet Apokolips, it would be one of the Green Lanterns.

Now it has to be noted that WB are yet to actually confirm that Green Lantern will indeed be making an appearance, and in fact producer Charles Roven had previously stated that the character wasn’t scheduled to appear before the planned second Justice League film in 2019. But with less than a year to go now before Justice League is released, even if WB wants this to be a surprise, we’re more than likely going to be hearing some casting news in the next few months which would tell us what’s what. If that does happen, it would actually also be the first piece of tangible development on the Green Lantern Corps movie as right now we know absolutely nada about it except it’s release date of July 24, 2020. Justice League will be out on November 17, 2017.

  1. I have the Green Lantern DVD and wouldn’t mind giving it away to hobos for plastic recycling. Anyway, I hope they cast James Marsden for Hal Jordan
