A few days back, it looked like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was in a bit of trouble. Director Gareth Edward’s prequel that sets up the events for the first Star Wars film and details how the Death Star plans were stolen by a ragtag group of misfits and space-Donnie Yen had left parent company Disney unhappy. The first cut of Rogue One that Edwards had handed in just didn’t have enough of that Star Wars feel according to sources, while Disney also wanted to throw in that Alden Ehrenreich fella who will be popping up in a solo Solo movie soon enough.

Which all meant that some reshoots were needed. Nothing too uncommon in Hollywood. I mean, GI Joe: Retaliation did extensive reshoots and look how well that turned out… crap. Anyway, the rumour mill has apparently strapped itself in and hit hyperspace, with one site that has had a few reliable hits in the past claiming that a massive chunk of Rogue One will be reshot.

Making Star Wars and their sources working in the crew of Rogue One, claim that an entire 40% of the film needs to be reshot, with sources saying that:

  • JJ Abrams was going to supervise these reshoots, but that isn’t happening. Abrams is pretty much done with Star Wars.
  • 32 different sets will be rebuilt for the reshoots
  • The crew will work six day weeks over the next month and a half for the reshoots

And here’s where you can really pinch the sodium chloride. It was also rumoured that Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation director Christopher McQuarrie was going to help out, with a new script that would be used for the reshoots. Disney was apparently super happy with McQuarrie’s script, which was only done after most of the shooting on Rogue One had already wrapped up. Because Hollywood.

The only problem here? That’s not happening, as McQuarrie himself took to Twitter to shoot rumours of his involvement down:

And there you have it. A healthy dose of salt for the morning. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is still on track for a December 16 release this year and stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk and Riz Ahmed.
