SA’s Weekend Top 10 Chart: I'm not telling you what I think anymore

2 min read

In what is clearly a conspiracy of the universe, I’m made to eat my comments from last week – at least briefly. Back then I scoffed at the so-so entry of Ratchet & Clank, noting the video game movie tradition of being generally rubbish. Then in storms Angry Birds and tips over my table in a fervour of pig-hunting.

The projectile birds have not done as well elsewhere, failing to beat Captain America: Civil War in the US even though its attendance has been dropping in double digits (which is normal given it’s been around for a few weeks). But locally the birds have cruised to the top, no doubt partially thanks to a lack of stuff to watch for the young ‘uns.

The captain slips to second, but behind him The Jungle Book and Bad Neighbours 2 stayed put, going nowhere. Instead two other movies took a kick in the teeth. Mother’s Day dropped three spots after a surprise 2nd spot debut last week and Barbershop 3 fell a terrific 5 positions to the precipice of 10th.

But my musings about video game movies are not entirely misplaced: I doubt Angry Birds will hold its ground. Yet Ratchet & Clank totally overshot my predictions. After dropping three places last week, it fell another four and is out of the charts. Zootropolis also left after a pretty decent run and the local film Mignon Mossie was here just long enough to score some free popcorn.

Replacing them are the foul fowls, as well as Uitvlucht, a new local movie about a woman picking up the pieces of her life as she takes a teaching job at a small Eastern Cape town, and The Perfect Match, a romantic comedy with the right demographics to hopefully give it some staying power (and is mercifully not adapted from a Nicholas Sparks novel).

A total movie glutton, nothing is too bad or too obscure to watch, unless it's something like The Human Centipede. If you enjoyed that, there is something wrong with you. But bless you anyway - even video nasties need love...
