The plot thickens in this trailer for Woody Allen's MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT

Let’s be honest about Woody Allen’s last film, Blue Jasmine: Cate Blanchett was fantastic in it and fully deserving of all the awards buzz she received, but the film as a whole just didn’t match up to her high bar. This is especially apparent when viewed in comparison to Allen’s previous jaunt, the magically charming Midnight in Paris. But based on this first trailer for Allen’s next film, Magic In the Moonlight, it has both magic (obviously) and charm brought to the fore in equal amounts by Colin Firth and Emma Stone.

“Magic in the Moonlight” is a romantic comedy about an Englishman brought in to help unmask a possible swindle. Personal and professional complications ensue. The film is set in the south of France in the 1920s against a backdrop of wealthy mansions, the Côte d’Azur, jazz joints and fashionable spots for the wealthy of the Jazz Age.

Magic in the Moonlight also stars Eileen Atkins, Marcia Gay Harden, Hamish Linklater, Simon McBurney, Jacki Weaver, Erica Leerhsen, Catherine McCormack, Paul Ritter, and Jeremy Shamos, and I’m getting a vision that it will be released on July 25, 2014.
