Look, let’s be honest. Pixar’s latest flick already had me at “dino”. Also, “Pixar”. Because while the acclaimed animation studio has dropped the ball a bit for me (yes, I’m looking at you, Cars movies!) they appear the be getting back to their winning ways after going a nearly unprecedented two years without a movie. The last time that happened was after 2001’s Monsters Inc. That time, they returned with the incredible one-two punch of Finding Nemo and The Incredibles, and now we see them resurgent with the fantastic looking Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur.
While we’ve seen a fair amount of the former – and early, very positive reviews are already out there, there hasn’t been that much revealed on The Good Dinosaur other than the behind the scenes trouble that saw original director Bob Petersen yanked from the project after he “couldn’t crack the third act” and the film finished by a braintrust of Pixar veterans (though Peter Sohn ended up getting the main directing credit).
Will all that unrest curse The Good Dinosaur to an extinction level event? Well, we can’t really say from this first teaser trailer for the film which just sets up the film’s “What if?” scenario of an Earth where dinosaurs were never wiped out. It’s certainly looks bright and colourful enough, even if the designs are a bit too cartoonish for my liking, making the characters stand out oddly against the photorealistic backgrounds, but hey, like I said at the start: Pixar and dinosaurs. So yeah, I’m in.
“The Good Dinosaur” asks the generations-old question: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? In theaters November 25, 2015, the film is a humorous and exciting original story about Arlo, a lively Apatosaurus with a big heart. After a traumatic event unsettles Arlo’s family, he sets out on a remarkable journey, gaining an unlikely companion along the way – a human boy. “The Good Dinosaur” is an extraordinary journey of self-discovery full of thrilling adventure, hilarious characters and poignant heart.
The Good Dinosaur sports the voice talents of Judy Greer, Neil Patrick Harris, Bill Hader, Frances McDormand, John Lithgow and Lucas Neff. It is scheduled for release on November 25, 2015.
