We talk World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor at Gamescom

Who doesn’t know about World of Warcraft, the game that really cemented the MMORPG genre? There have been loads of expansions over the years. The upcoming fifth expansion is titled Warlords of Draenor. We caught up with Blizzard at the Activision stand at Gamescom to have a chat about what players can expect.

My point of contact was Tom Chilton, the Game Director for the upcoming expansion. The content is set after the events of the Mists of Panderia and takes place on the world of Draenor, the original home world of the orcs. The interview room was surrounded by incredibly noisy people, so please excuse that. Here’s what Tom had to say, accompanied by the trailer for the game itself.

I did ask if this would be the last expansion for World of Warcraft, and if we could expect a proper sequel at some stage. Tom declined, saying that they are already working on the next expansion.

Although the World of Warcraft player base has declined somewhat, it still remains incredibly popular. Will you be diving into this expansion when it comes out? I’m interested to see if it will pick up the numbers drastically, or if it will be a short time before player count dwindles down once more.

Coincidentally, we are giving away a bunch of beta keys for the game right here. Head on over if you’d like to do some grinding in the orc homeland before the game officially releases.

I love the idea of seeing Gul’dan and Manaroth as well as the potential of seeing a new Lich King that may not be pure evil.

    So many possibilities open now.

“Already working on the next expansion?!” You Monsters! Let it die already! Make World of Warcraft 2 or something! I tried playing it again, bought a month game time and possibly used 10 days of it…The graphics were just cringe worthy at this point, and started just depressing me. While I still feel the raids and boss fights mechanics wise are better then any other MMO, this game needs more of a rework from the ground up then ANY.

The Cringe Worthy Graphics as you so put is the reason WoW was and is still such a popular MMO. you can play that game on a Piece of Shit PC, with a Piece of Shit Line and still have fun. Sure you wont be able to do End Game Raiding at a HC level. talking about HC Level most raiders I know turn down the Graphics anyway to be able to see better in the fight.

I used to always laugh. My mods chewed more memory than the actual game itself. then again I used to run with about 97 mods on. 😛

While I see your point, and I admit its still one of the better MMO’s out there in terms of content. Its not just the graphics that gets me, its the outdated animation and combat mechanics. But from what I see, the new expansion is bring in some new animations to the models, so we’ll see. I still feel they should just stop with the expansions and bring in a completely new game.

I am very excited about the new version! I hope that leveling up will be easier because currently the only way to level up faster is by using “Zygor Guides”. It allowed me to level up to level 90 in just 5 days. You can read more about that here – http://wowreview.weebly.com
