Ever heard of Saturday Night Live? It’s a long-running US comedy sketch show, which has seen several of its stars rise and become big names in Hollywood. People like Will Ferrell, Tina Fey and Kristin Wiig to name a few. Aside from the seasons starring those up and comers however, the show is downright crap, with jokes that can be seen coming from a mile away and smelt even further thanks to the fact that these gags ride a beaten and dead horse onto TV screens. Several of their stars regularly band together to create a film or two. Such as this one for Intramural, which isn’t scoring any touchdowns with me.
Intramural is a hilarious send-up of inspirational sports movies replete with epic training montages, over the top motivational speeches and bone crunching tackles, “Intramural” tells an epic tale of a group of 5th year seniors who form an intramural football team in their final year of college before being forced out into the real world. “Intramural” is the GLORIOUS love child of cult classics such as “Wet Hot American Summer” and “Dodgeball”.
I honestly didn’t have a single chuckle at all through that trailer. I’m not saying that the world isn’t ready for a new parody of sports, but hell, none of this material looks fresh. It pretty much runs like a highlight reel of the aforementioned Wet Hot American Summer and Dodgeball, as well as other films like The Comebacks and The Replacements. Maybe the trailer is doing a bad job on selling it, but I’m not going to be running out of my door anytime soon to rent this film.
Intramural pulls out all the stops when it debuts at the Tribeca film festival later this year, and stars Kate McKinnon, Jay Pharoah, Beck Bennett, Nikki Reed, D.C. Pierson, and Michael Hogan. Andrew Disney and Jack Lacy direct. Expect the full film to VOD services later in the year.
