We may be living in the age of the comedy sequel to films that happen to be ten years and older. Anchorman got a second film last year, Dumb and Dumber To is tearing up the box office and now it looks like Zoolander 2 is finally starting to make a move. Director and model star Ben Stiller has been talking a Zoolander sequel for years, and it looks like the wheels may finally be turning, now that Penelope Cruz has signed on to co-star in the film.
Deadline reported that Cruz has signed on for the film, with zero other details present. Still, I’d imagine her having a role that serves as a foil to Ben Stiller and good looking inability to turn left. Stiller is set to direct once again, and will also reunite with Will Ferrell’s fashionista Mugatu. Whether Owen Wilson will also come back as Hansel, is unclear. Stiller has been talking about the film for quite some time. Back in 2011, he mentioned the script:
It’s ten years later and most of it is set in Europe… it’s basically Derek and Hansel… though the last movie ended on a happy note a lot of things have happened in the meantime. Their lives have changed and they’re not really relevant anymore. It’s a new world for them. Will Ferrell is written into the script and he’s expressed interest in doing it. I think Mugatu is an integral part of the Zoolander story, so yes, he features in a big way.
Meanwhile, I’ll be popping some sequel pills. Because who knows just how much a script can change in three years.
