PlayStation 4 Neo: Is a mid-generation console hardware refresh a good idea?

The new, higher-specced PlayStation 4 is almost a dead certainty. Likely to be revealed at E3 this year, the new system – apparently dubbed Neo – will sport a faster CPU, a beefier GPU and be able to output better visuals, and run games at higher frame rates. Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry has a typically excellent technical breakdown of the PlayStation 4 Neo and what it contains – and it seems the spec bump is significant.

According to them, here’s the increase you can expect:

Base PS4 PS4K Neo Boost
CPU Eight Jaguar cores clocked at 1.6GHz Eight Jaguar cores clocked at 2.1GHz 1.3x
GPU 18 Radeon GCN compute units at 800MHz 36 ‘improved’ GCN compute units at 911MHz 2.3x FLOPs
Memory 8GB GDDR5 at 176GB/s 8GB GDDR5 at 218GB/s 24% more bandwidth, 512MB more useable memory

The jump in graphics prowess is the most exciting bit, indeed – as it won’t be based around something available on the shelf right now. While the machine likely won’t be able to run games at 4K, it will be able to upscale to that resolution very nicely, running games at 1080p and 60fps with relative ease.

The trouble here is that developers are restricted from using the new power to give games better features; games have to play the same – just with graphical upgrades or faster frames. The need for compatibility with the base or older PS4 model, which definitely puts a ceiling on what developers are able to do with the system.

Right now, it seems like it’s really just more of a headache for developers than it is a boon.

According to Eurogamer (whose full report you really should read), we could even see the PlayStation 4 Neo and games utilising it towards the end of this year.

And honestly, I still don’t know how I feel about this. On the one hand, the prospect of smoother, shiner gameplay experiences on a console sounds quite nice – but it on the other it just flies in the face of what consoles are about. They’re meant to be set hardware without upgrade paths. It also feels like a slap in the face to those who’ve spent a fair bit of money on their consoles, especially if there’s no trade-in program available.

What do you think? Is a mid-generational refresh a smart idea?

I think the slim option was always a good idea – but this seems a bit much. The hardware upgrades are significant enough to actually cause issues.

Exactly!! This now in turn literally just turns into another PC platform, which by the way, we now use to stream Netflix more than actually play games…

Take your medicine. They were all under-powered from the start to be able to deliver on the “every game at 1080p & 60fps” promises on a regular basis without compromising. Do you want what was promised or do you want to settle?

It’s not mid generation. Just because the last gen lasted 8 years doesn’t make it the norm.
This is year number 4. New consoles should be coming out this year. Now we getting a lacklustre console upgrade for the next 4 years.

This is some serious bullshit. 2020 and gaming will still be stuck in 2012. It’s 2016 and games are stuck in 2012. 4 more years of this shit.

We need to stop supporting DRM and get back to supporting PC gaming. That is the only way video games will advance with technology.

Don’t Support DRM. Cyberpunk 2077 console port is coming to PC.

You could always just game on the PC. What do you think you are missing out on exactly ? DRM became a serious headache on PC first dude. I explained to you that DRM actually serves to protect IP. Intellectual Property. Google it. Games are advancing at a rate. I can assure you that this advance that you think is being withheld is not as great as you may believe. I understand 3D pretty well, Game engines use a great many cheats to emulate things that you may believe to be ground breaking. The most substantial change I have seen from a gpu processing standpoint is adaptive tasselation. All the rest is only improvements on existing tech. You can thank consoles for the mainstream acceptance of gaming and by virtue of this fact, a quicker advance in graphic fidelty.

Holy Christ, You are stupid. It takes teams of hundreds of people to develope a game. Hundreds and possibly thousands by the time a game is distributed globally. How does this strategy serve to feed all those people ? Send their kids to school, pay the electricity etc etc. It would take a paradigm shift in the way the world runs to accommodate your little fantasy. Grow up sunshine.

            April 21, 2016 at 08:53

Actually, I am thinking about the bigger picture. You post irrational things about your hatred of DRM and how PS4 is holding innovation back etc etc. What is your point ? Explain what gives you so much grief . Is it the way the Game Industry has become a bloated profit driven behemoth or do you feel games aren’t up to scratch. The only thing you seem to endorse is The Witcher 3. If you were a little clearer in your explanation of what you hate so much, I could probably relate. But, It is what it is.

        • Darren Peach

          April 20, 2016 at 16:24

So, this is the premise of your argument ? This is a long term strategy that pertains to his individual circumstance. But I say the merrit of this works in his case as it serves to open up new markets for him. Given how global gaming is and the very short relative cycle of new releases, Game developers lose money when a whole generation of tweens pirate their products. How many studios have closed their doors ? Software companies have it worse. In all my years as a professional I have yet to find a company that does not have illegal software running in some capacity. The point is that while there is merrit in this idea, someone is always been shafted and this simply is not practical in todays business environment.

So then CDPR hates people who buy Collectors editions. We pay more but can’t pre-load and are forced to use their system.

          • Ryanza

            April 20, 2016 at 13:34

the witcher 3 pc can be played on any capable computer not forced to use their system. On top of that, you get a code to use their digital system.
if you have a computer that meets requirements, you can play the game.

if you wanted steam so badly then you should have bought the game on steam because that was also an option. you could even buy the game on origin, uplay, xbox live, psn.

but it sounds like you would be happy if all pc video games are limited to steam only. from any capable computer to only computers connected to the internet and connected to steam.

so cutting off millions of gamers from buying and playing the witcher 3 just to make you happy about buying the collectors edition and drm ing it to steam.

          • Kromas untamed

            April 20, 2016 at 13:36

Twisting my words I see. I would have been happy if they gave you the option of Steam or their crappy system for their most expensive flavour of the game.

          • Ryanza

            April 20, 2016 at 13:45

Steam is not CDP. gog is CDP.

witcher 3 pc – open to play on any pc if the pc can handle it.
witcher 3 digital code – free digital game.
and you want another free steam code which they have to pay for and make the retail product more expensive. remember how well the witcher 3 was priced, pc and console games.

anyway. you knew before buying the collectors edition there was no steam code in there. But you bought it anyway. Not to the fault of CDPR but to your own.

the way the witcher 3 was released, all pc games should be released like that. and you steam people need not shit all over it just because it’s not steam.

The idea is absurd. It takes the whole point of console gaming and trashes it.
If you want the upgrade path use a PC. If you want a standardised system use a console. That’s that it always was. Not any more.

Not only is it defeating the purpose of consoles as a platform of choice, it completely destroys the faith of the user base. They were expecting a system that would last 6+ years and now suddenly their consoles become obsolete. Yes devs will have a ceiling limit. You know what that means? Devs are going to make dgames to run on the base PS4 and simply ensure the new PS4.5 (PS5) runs it too. They aren’t going to add in anything extra or show extra love to the PS5 because they must make sure the game is going to run on the 4. Do they honestly think devs are going to shove extra dev time in to a system of already broken, unoptimised games where devs barely meet demands and time constraints now? Please.

So you have a completely redundant console that is going to fail out the gate.

Watch. Mark my words, devs and Sony will use the failed PS4.5 as “proof” that gamers don’t want stronger hardware and continue to deliver lackluster products because they’ll see it as “It’s what the consumer wants” and not “Hey we screwed the consumers who bought PS4’s and now they can’t buy a new one because they don’t feel it’s fair to have to updgrade to enjoy games”

Yes the PS4 is underpowered. Yes the new one seems to be looking at fixing that. But they should have stuck out the life time cycle and then released a proper PS5 with proper performance when the time came. They should have learned from their mistake and released something amazing at the next proper refresh point.

Now instead they throw mud on the userbase, give it a cheap marketting gimmick and try cover their tracks by forcing devs to to not make games to push the new hardware.

Oh speaking of, they’ll also use that as a way to say “See, the improvements on the PS4.5 (5) are so big yet the difference in gaming is negligable. That’s why the PS4 was stated as such a good console because it was already powerful enough” BULL. They put a ceiling on what may done and that’s why this console will never see itself be used to its next full potential.

Pathetic and sad. At least MS with the Xbone admited they screwed the pooch and have systematically been making changes to their CURRENT units to fix the damage they did.

This…. This just stinks of money grabbing and a way to force people to buy yet ANOTHER PS4 way before its lifespan was finished.

Oh… Also. Called it. I said that the console lifespan would be reduced to far below expecttations because of the crappy hardware of the base unit and now my words have come true.

Stuff it. I’ll stick to my PC where I know my lifespan can change more drastically due to tech advancement. At least there I know what I’m in for.

Couldn’t care less. Apple launches a new iPhone every second day and nobody cares. As long as they take care of all their customers I’m chilled.

PC gaming is now officially cheaper than console gaming. Sony is trying to tell console gamers something. $60 per year, $400 purchases every 3 years, pay more for games…

PC gaming. It’s where the value is.

Sony forgot what Sega tried to do with the 32X. It’s not a good idea to split your user base like this.

It is good? Who knows. All I know is that I’m probably going to buy it because of OCD or something.
