Battlefy release stats: eSports on the rise

Mmmm beer from the bar and pie (charts) HAHA GEDDIT

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that eSport is well on its way to being recognised by not just gamers, but people all over the world. Battlefy is a site that allows people to create and manage custom eSport events. Their latest stats are pretty darn interesting.

Their findings show that eSport is rapidly growing year after year. These are the number of tournaments held in North America alone:

That’s some pretty solid growth! It’s also mind boggling to think that there may be 47,000+ tournaments happening this year.

The following shows the breakdown of the top 10 games in 2013:

Nothing surprising, with MOBAs dominating the top two positions. I’m also not shocked to see FIFA up there because I know it is pretty damn popular. It is strange to see the shooters further down, namely Call of Duty and Counter-Strike. Those really were the big names in eSport tournaments a few years ago.

I don’t think things will change too much for the next few years. We might see some games move up and down several positions (especially with all the new upcoming MOBAs), but I don’t see League of Legends or Dota 2 going anywhere anytime soon. What would be interesting is if Dota 2 overtook League at some stage, but even I will admit that that’s a long shot.

Battlefy collected all this information in an effort to get a better understanding of its users and the North American eSports community. It will be interesting to see how their stats look next year.

  1. Interesting to see Pokemon beating Counter Strike.

Awesome to see the increase though. Now if only I was 10 years old, at the start of my career and could viably play eSports. =/
