Call of Duty : Advanced Warfare to support dedicated servers

DediServers

Dedicated servers are an important element in the longevity of any multiplayer game. The last Call of Duty, Ghosts, had a hybrid server system using both listen and dedicated servers. It didn’t work very well – and is at least one of the reasons COD Ghosts’ userbase has dwindled. Could Advanced Warfare make up for those sins? Maybe.

Speaking to Stevivor, Sledgehammer Games’ Michael Condrey confirmed that the game would be getting dedicated server support – though was mum on just how it would work, or what platforms would get support.

“We’ve got some announcements coming. Yes, we will be supporting dedicated servers and there will be announcements soon on which providers and platforms. I can’t answer just yet, but you can let your community know that it’s coming,” he said.

What the game definitely needs is an open sort of dedicated server  – even if it’s just for unranked matches. IF ranked games have to go through an official server, so be it.  A big problem with dedicated servers, at least for those of us in South Africa and who play on consoles, is there’s never local servers. Another potential problem is if the Xbox One version relies on Microsoft’s Azure cloud for servers – something that’s likely never going to be implemented here. The lack of “the cloud” is the primary cited reason that Titanfall was never officially released here.

While we have no real details of how dedicated servers will be implemented, does their inclusion in Advanced Warfare make a difference to you?

It really sucks living so far from everywhere else……! I love SA, But some of the compromises that are mandated by the lack of first world infrastructure in our tiny place in the multiverse means that we will always be faced with these sorts of dilemmas. While I am sure that Africa will get there eventually, Its taking too damn long.

If a mp fps game doesn’t have dedicated servers I probably wont play it. Playing Black Ops 2 with dedicated servers was what got me into multiplayer gaming. And not because it was a fun game, but because there was no lag and you were mostly grouped with fellow South Africans.

Black ops 2 is a joke compared to the PC support cod4 has.

You can’t compare a game with local servers to a game that doesn’t have local servers. That’s not fair. I call racism.

While this is great news (local dedicated servers), it also means they have you by the balls.

Doesnt actually mean anything. It could still mean clan matches are going to be hosted p2p and doesnt mean we’re going to get a server browser.
