The most annoying thing about playing Call of Duty multiplayer, other than the prepubescent idiots who assert that they’ve done terrible things with your mother, is the prevalence of quick scoping. Yes, some guys have worked hard to hone their sniper skills to very nearly fire a scoped rifle from the hip – but it’s a bit of an exploit, and it’s damned annoying. It could also be gone in Call of Duty: Ghosts.

In a statement too long for twitter but posted there anyway, Ghosts executive producer Mark Rubin had this to say about sniping in Call of Duty: Ghosts.

Update/Clarification regarding Sniper Rifles:

One of the areas that is getting lot of love in Call of Duty: Ghosts is the Sniper Rifle. By creating the Marksman class we were able to focus the Sniper class on really powerful high-caliber weapon systems. We feel, and many of the pro players who have played would agree, that sniping has never been better.

The changes we’ve made, like dual render scopes and increased damage really make snipers a great competitive class to use. We’ve also done a lot with map design (sight lines and cover) to ensure that all classes are viably effective. Both short range and long range classes will be effective on the same maps.

However in re-envisioning sniper rifles some aspects, such as sway timing, have changed the way sniper rifles function and so traditional “quick-scoping” has been affected. Is it gone completely? Maybe. It certainly won’t be viable in the way it previously was. Can’t wait for you snipers out there to get your hands on these new sniper rifles and try them out for yourselves.

See you in game!

While some people are likely to be pissed about the change, I’m pretty glad. Sniper rifles can now be used as they’re intended to be; as slower, more methodical long-range weapons. Plus, now you’ll be able to actually look down a sniper scope without being called a “hard scoper” or a “n00b.” Hopefully Ghosts’ maps will be up to the task for some decent long-range warfare.

I wonder if Rubin’s received any death threats yet.

Editor. I’m old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time – they were capable of being masterpieces. I’m here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.

n00b hardscoper sounds like a name from a CoD porn parody.

Hopefully this is sorted, so tired of having my head blown off by a sniper who’s scope was barely on target for a nano second

Can you pick up a sniper rifle and do it? Probably not.. why? because you haven’t practiced. It’s an absolute bitch to hone, endless hours of practice, endless damage to your KD before you get good.

  • Admiral Chief of Rivia

I hope they remove it. This latest version is starting to earn my respect

  • Airborne

ooooh! Counter-Sniping! now thats fkn awesim… hope that the maps are big!

Campers!!! So many campers!!! Campers everywhere!!!

  • Admiral Chief of Rivia

That’s why I love Planetside 2. When you land a sniper shot (headshot) from 400m away, you really feel like you achieved something. Leading the target, or compensating for bullet drop. So much of awesome

It’s like the first time I got a 500m+ headshot in battlefield 3. Priceless.

      • TiMsTeR1033

that I agree with really is an amazing feeling!

      • Maxiviper117

        How about a 1113m headshot 😉

        • Lourens Jordaan

Haven’t managed that yet. I don’t like sitting that long in one place to get my elevation just right. The new range finder and scope elevation settings would really cut the time down and I’ll give it another go. At the moment my best headshot is only 565m.

And Who didnt like Sniper Elite 2? Yoh! Kentucky Windage, Bullet drop…

Removing Quick Scoping wont slow down snipers, they’ll just keep more distance.
Ive felt the handling of sniper rifles since MW2 has needed work, the handling in CoD4 was superb, quick scoping felt natural and comfortable, to the point that it wasnt even necessary, but since then they have felt heavy and sluggish, making quick scoping almost essential if you want any kills.

  • Kromas

That is why I like DayZ. Real snipers calculate distance in conjunction with intended bullet drop as well as scope type. Also we don’t have unlimited ammo to just fire off as many rounds till it hits something.

    • Tarisma

Don’t forget your not trying to be a hero and get headshots, aim for the body mass.

      • Kromas

I prefer not to kill but just maim since I actually am a hero. 😛

        • TiMsTeR1033

to let the filth live another day?

          • Kromas

Hero/bambi skinned I let go and even help out. Bandit/any form of camo I Shoot on sight(and take their stuff).

  • Mossel

Finally! I’ve been hating on this fo ages!

  • RinceTheSwineStains

    Where is Foxhound?

    • ThatManOverThere

Crying in the corner coz of the Developer n00bs nerfing the sniper rifles :'(

  • Stigmata101

Here’s an idea COD, why not have REALISTIC gun behaviour, just a thought.

Has anyone tried to ‘quick scope’ with a rifle, NEVER going to happen. I am surprised they have not go curving the bull in the game.

    • Ell torn

You ever seen anyone reanimate after taking a shotgun to the face? It’s not real bro, it’s just a game.

  • I’d be happier to see snipers removed from the game entirely… drives me insane
