I haven’t enjoyed playing Call of Duty’s multiplayer in years. In fact, its probably been about a decade since I spent more than a handful of hours getting my ass handed to me in each game’s adversarial element. And it’s not just because I suck, though that probably has a lot to do with it. Running around, killing or being killed without some sort of narrative impetus just isn’t for me – which is where Call of Duty WWII’s War Mode has me excited for the series multiplayer again.
I played two rounds of War mode on the map that’ll be available in tomorrow’s closed beta. Called Operation Breakout, it’s a simple objective-based affair that pits the allies against the axis forces in a tug-of-war push for dominance. It’s similar to Battlefield 1’s Operations mode but at the breakneck, almost arcade pace of Call of Duty. We played the game 6v6, but when Call of Duty WW2 is out, that number can be doubled.
The first objective was for my Allied team to capture a command post, which we did with relative ease as we pushed the Nazi scum back. Our next task was to build a bridge across a ravine, which proved a tougher challenge. The Axis forces, holed up in broken buildings on the other side, made it tough to push forward and find enough time to work on the structure in the open.
For a while, it looked like we were on the brink of defeat, but my team managed to get across with nary a second to spare. Onward then, to an ammunition dump where we had to plant a bomb to rid the war of a cache of Nazi munitions. That done, it was time to escort an allied tank towards a church courtyard to secure a victory.
After that, sides got switched uo and we got to experience the same objectives from the other opposing faction. My team, now emboldened by our win and our team work, stopped the Allied forces from even securing the first command post. Easy.
Simple objectives, sure, but it’s damned exhilarating and the most fun I’ve had in Call of Duty’s multiplayer in years.
It may be because my team actually won for a change, but it’s something I want to play more of in Call of Duty WW2 – and I implore you to give it a try in the closed beta that starts tomorrow if you manage to snag access.
