Codemasters gets rid of the fluff, focuses on racing

2 min read

Codemasters makes some of the best racing titles in the business. Not that I’d really know, because I’d rather eat broken glass from the floor of a public restroom than play one. F1, Grid and Dirt all come from Codemasters – though i really should use the past tense.

Codemasters, ladies and gentlemen is no more – and has been rebranded as Codemasters Racing.

"We have kept our reputation for delivering best-in-class racing games," Codemasters communications chap Rich Eddy told MCV. "And best-in-class racing games is now our razor focus going forward."In racing, we are No.2 in Europe and that’s not good enough. We want to take racing games across multiple platforms and genres. So that players can play anytime, anywhere and on any device. Racing is our DNA, it is our heritage, it is our specialisation and it is our absolute focus going forward."

It’s good news for fans of the company’s racing games – because it means budgets will focused directly on the titles the company’s best at – but it will come as a bit of a blow to those who’re fond of somewhat more realistic combat shooter – as it could signal the end of Operation Flashpoint. That, and its other big shooter, the frankly awful Bodycount failed to perform to expectation.

The company’s also unveiled Racenet, a persistent social platform and online that’ll tie together stats from all games and future racing titles, as well as allow drivers to win new content and in-game items.

What do you think? Good move for Codemasters? I’m certainly happy on the focus, if itmeans we can get a new Micro Machines game.

Editor. I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.
